Nearly every time I start Firefox I get a message about upgrades on either the addons or Java. Surely I shouldn't have to keep on going through the update bit then a restart of Firefox so often.

Angel, I get the same on Firefox. I don't use it much these days, it's a pain in the proverbial primary orifice.

I've never had a message about Java, not from Firefox anyway. As for the add-ons, I only use adblockplus as I can't abide a cluttered browser and never EVER install a toolbar of any kind or use any other type of add-on with Firefox.
The updates to Firefox itself are quite regular though, but I welcome that as an improvement (to security mostly) more than a hindrance.
How many add-ons do you have?

I'm none the wiser - FTP means file transfer protocol to me and there must be dozens of FTP add-ons for Firefox. Don't you use 'adblockplus' then? It cuts out all the garbage spam and adverts that ruin a lot of sites.
Maybe you need to post a hijackthis log so I can I get a clearer picture of what is happening because it's not normal for such regular updates. Mine probably updates only once or occasionally twice a month on average

I use Firefox every day and like mikkh get no more then one possibly two updates a month, although you do get the odd time when they do an update and follow that with another shortly after. Firefox 4 will be with us shortly, jorg

Not being a Firefox fan and preferring to use IE8, I don't have any of that sort of problem. I do have Firefox, but can't get used to it myself. It's a personal thing!

The ftp is FireFTP; that's all it says.
To be honest my friend who recommended it has no problems, but I never seem to get the upload right - perhaps thats me.
Only other thing I normally use Firefox for is my Pixiepit scrabble games.
Will look for adblockplus

I dont rightly know why you would want that FireFTP. I'm not saying thats what causing your problem, I just dont know why you would want it. I down and upload all the time and I've never needed to add anything to what my OS already has. I think its one of these apps that blinds people with BS.

Well so do I and I think I do it quite well without Fire FTP. Now if you had a HTML editor to build your websites, that would make sense and Firefox has a couple of good ones. FireFTP, makes no sense to me whatsoever. However I dont think it would contribute to your trouble either, well it shouldn't. More likely to be a corrupted installation. Try uninstalling Firefox and reinstalling it.

If you want a good uploader program, why not try Coffee Cup Free FTP ? It works great, and reasonably fast for a free uploader ! I've used it for years without a problem.

Hiya, I have Firefox but it takes ages to start up, really..really slow, dont have much on the lap top to slow things down, have AVG as well, Infact the whole start up proceedure is very slow...windows explorer keeps coming up as "Not responding" when I try to get to documents, gets there eventually but takes quite a while Have Vista Business installed.
Your thoughts would be appreciated , as ever
Dell Latitude D620, about a 12 months old

Being a Dell laptop; it will have the 946 extra buttons, all of which are in the Start menu. Unless you have an allergy to clicking a mouse and have to push a button, I would disable the lot for a start. Leave the touch pad or you might be in trouble.
The only other thing I can think of, its Vista Business and will have lots of Services running in the background. Go into Services and disable anything that you know you don't use. You need to be a bit careful doing this and check the Dependencies, or you might find something wont run you do need. Some of the services can be deceiving.
I would get rid of AVG and install the Comodo suite if you need a firewall. If you are behind a hardware firewall, install Avast.

A router has got a firewall built into it Copey. Being a laptop, you might not always use it in one place and so its not always protected even if you use a router at home.

Type msconfig into Run, Startup and take the tick out of all the boxes you don't want to run. Its best not to disable the Services using that as you cant check the dependencies. Right click on Computer and select Manage, Services. Then when you click on something you get an explanation of what it does. Then you can open the Properties and check the dependencies.

I'm pleased that just getting rid of AVG has made a difference. A lot of people dont believe just how much that program can slow a computer down.
Disabling stuff from the Startup, isnt anything to be worried about. All the things will still work, except the buttons and they are manual instead of automatic. If something you need to start dont, then all you have to do is check the box again. The same goes for the services, everything is reversable. The services can be set to manual instead of auto and will still work when you want them to, but not have them running all the time. As long as you keep a note of what you do, you cant break anything.
I use MSN and IE browsers, but I have used Firefox. I only used it when I needed to have a HTML editor and it has a couple of good ones as addons. Theres nothing wrong with any of them really, different people have different opinions about them. A lot depends on what reason you have for using it. Most what get said about browsers is BS anyway. People like to put IE down, but its no better or worse than any of the others.

Well I can catagorically state that since I took AVG off it is very very much quicker.. Have also found a section about turning programs on and off, dont know whether that helps much but have turned a few off..Net meeting/etc etc I`ll have another look at that other thing you suggest. If there isnt much difference I might as well stay with FF, if it aint broke etc etc Cheers Ken
