Hi all. I have only just recently built and published my own website (first attempt a a website) for my video business. I have just spent the last few hours 'tweaking' it. I have made the main body text a bit smaller, added a dedicated page for a recent job (more to be added in the week) and would like some opinions and what you think. I have asked a few family and friends to check it out and they have returned with possitive reports but I am never sure when it comes to family that I am getting objective feedback I feel I will from you lot. Regarding the design, I wanted the bold colour and the fairly open page layouts but need to know if it is clear and logical to the first time visitor (that's you lot). Is there enough information there for you if you were looking for these type of services, would you add anything or change anything, all suggestions considered. Ta Movieman www.WeFilmYou.co.uk

Just observations since you ask.
TYPOS. Weddings page as UNOBTRUSIVE
Editing page and OURS is good and BREATHE whatever you REQUIRE
About Us Not a great photo of Nigel, too dark, top of head cropped and other images on site are blurry. Could be bigger and HD. These are examples of your work so maybe should be really crisp
Do you offer any insurance in the event your work is lost/destroyed in some way before it's delivered. You don't want to be sued by irate wedding customers if the record of their special day is ruined.

good points
I'll check them out. It's strange with typos how you can look at something hundreds of times, concentrate really hard and then check again only to find that as soon as someone else looks at it they spot stuff straight away. lol

It's good for a first time effort, but seeing as we're being totally objective and hopefully constructive
A bit too much centering of text for my taste with badly adjusted number of words for following lines - the first bit of the 'weddings' section looks particularly bad.
I personally wouldn't put my phone number on every page, that's what the 'contact us' page is for. It also appears to be a mobile number which would put me off slightly, both for the cost and because it looks a bit amateurish. I would expect an ongoing established business to have a land line number myself.
The purple box to the right of the logo doesn't work for me, it looks too sparse and looks like a banner advert waiting to happen.
I saw something mentioned about prices to suit, but if I was a customer, I'd prefer to see a few example prices
Maybe you should also consider a testimonials page with comments from satisfied customers?
In 'about us' I wouldn't even include a personal photo myself. You're selling your cinematic skills, not herbal remedies of how to keep your boyish good looks after 30 years behind the camera (d**n you :-p)
Very good effort, just needs polishing a bit

Conference Recording, Training Films, Promotions etc. Click and Weddings, Event Recording and Family Films - no need for capitals; if you want to emphasise try bold.
Click of the. Should be click on
Where you have etc. as part of a sentence, the following word does not have a capital, because it is part of the same sentence.
I would also like to see a few short clips behind the pctures to show what you do.

Points taken re the centering of text and is one of the things I am working on. You have hit the nail right on the head re the top bit...I am just creating a flash banner for that now. The reason for the inclusion of a photo of myself in all my well preserved glory (cough cough) was to try to emphasize that I run a very personalized business, even the corporate stuff is usually dealt with on a one to one basis, I do think it's a bit dark though (might not look so well preserved if I lighten it too much lol). My intention is to have examples of video on the site in both the corporate and personal sections.
The whole reason I have had a stab myself is my original site was so dated and I was getting quotes of up to £5000 for a site similar to the one I have now. I have just done a few corporates for new clients (given out a lot of cards) and wanted to get something up quick (and keep it simple), hence the lack of bells and whistles.

Right, I have made some changes as per your observations and hopefully eradicated the typos. Have a look and please pile in with the suggestions.

The last line of text on wedding page appears to me as below:

Not sure what the last line of text problem is Phoney...mine displays OK on a couple of machines and I have tried it in IE, firefox and safari. I'd be interested if any others are having the same result?
I have various clips and showreels from my previous site but decided to put only new material on the new one. I am just editing together sequences from stuff I have shot recently to put up. I am going to try and have them play through an embedded player from either Exposure Room or Vimeo.
I don't do photo's, just the video work, any stills we do shoot are always incorporated into a video or used as cover art or for packaging of the finished films.
It's good to get a variety of veiws as it's difficult to judge your own work when you have been close to it for a long time.

Once you get the syntax sorted and take out some of the centering, it will look very good.
You are right about not seeing your own mistakes, I usually ask people to proof read for me as well.

Angel, re some of your suggestions....The capitalisation of the categories on the home page 'Weddings, Event Recording and Family Films' is deliberate and used this way for two reasons, firstly because I didn't want too much bold text on the pages but mainly because this is the standard practice for film titles, to use a capital for every word in the title. The use of etc. then followed by the next word starting with a capital is because they end the previous sentence, the following part is a short sentence in it's own right and is why I have put them on a separate line. I have edited quite a bit of the text and removed the extra line spaces on some pages to tighten those sections up leaving me with almost alternate pages that have centered text then justified text on the next. I have tried pages such as the wedding section with justified and align left but neither looks right with my preferred choice of three centered pictures.
Please keep any suggestion coming. My aim is to get the basic site laid out and looking right before I start to add any of the animated sections or the video player section.
thanks

Right, I have now had another shuffle of the web pages. The centring has gone, I have opted for justified throughout except the 'contact us page'. The phone number from the page footer has gone. I have kept the smaller text size but changed the font, I think it makes it much easier to read......what do you think?
Cheers
MM
PS Thank you all for you suggestions and comments, it's exactly what I wanted.

Yes it looks better, but there seems to be a problem on the home page
The "Click on the 'Go Corporate' link" bit has appeared on another line by itself and made the bottom line of text unreadable - it needs to be on the previous line
Same kind of problem on the editing page. I've just noticed you have included the name of the page on each page, which is a bit unnecessary and probably the reason for the glitch on the editing page.
.... I like the you're not nicking my stuff message when you right click btw

No problems in Vector Linux using 'SeaMonkey' , 'Konqueror' or Opera
Firefox is not behaving at all, but I know why - I've broken it on an experimental version

Phoney, I'm not getting that here but I'll add a bit of extra space betweenthe text and the pictures and see if that sorts it out.
