Hi there just downloaded Avast 5 - its nice and slick and you have a nice orange icon instead of the blue one. This version you can even shut off the sounds, but the male voice has changed to female. If you install over top of previous version you will be registred from the date you registered version 4 for 1 year. If you do a clean install then it automatically registered for 13 months, but you do have to register. You don't get an e-mail with a key, its just registered for 13 months. The horrible radio window has gone instead you get lots of tunable facilities to control what gets checked. I did get a warning from live mail when accessing google mail as to a check that should be changed. All in all a very good update There are a couple of Videos reviewing the program here forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=55595.0

I got exactly the same trouble as you Lynnrose. I had put a new motherboard in The Beast a couple of weeks ago, and the Asus drivers played hell with the Gigabyte ones. The Avast wouldn't work, I uninstalled it then it wouldn't install again. I formatted and reinstalled, that sorted the whole thing out.
Yesterday I was asked if I wanted to update the program and it put another version in. They put a patch in when a lot of people were getting bother with it and I presume that now they have fixed it properly. That is only for the freezing browser, I still dont know whats wrong with yours. Unless you need to update your drivers. I just haven't come across anyone else who have had that bother, I knew the cause of my trouble and it was nothing to do with Avast.

Spoke to soon.
No they haven't fixed it yet. I had the self protection turned off on this computer before I changed the motherboard and set it that way after I changed it. This afternoon my browser started freezing and as nothing is running above 30ÂșC, I knew it couldn't be heat related. I checked Avast and when it updated in the morning, it had turned the self protection back on. I have turned it back off again now and everything seems to be alright again. My laptop has still got the self protection turn on and seems unaffected, so its a hit and miss thing.

When it first came out Graham, it seemed to be XP users who were most affected. I had motherboard trouble on this one and couldn't really tell what was going on. I've got a brand new Gigabyte board on here now running Win7 Pro and it freezes without the Self Protection turned off. My 2 year old Acer Aspire is running Win7 Home Premium and works fine with everything turned on. They say its only a minority of computers that are affected, but Avast know the problem exists and recommend turning off the Self Protection if it occurs.
