They dont come any lighter than Comodo Elvis. Its not the firewall that is slowing down the computer, its XP SP3. You have got a Windows 98 machine struggling with an OS its not built for. Your a Linux man, thats what you should be running on that computer, not XP. XP Home without any service packs might just run on it, but then it wouldn't run very much as most programs need at least SP2. I dont know what programs you have got installed, but with a 6 gig hard drive, I shouldn't think you have got very much free space left on the drive. You need about 20% free space, just to keep the engine running.

Yup ! Perfect machine for Linux !
I was at the computer market last week, and they were selling P4 micro ATX all-in-one motherboards with a Celeron 3.0ghz processor for $10.00AU (£6.00), and there were others up to a socket 775 all-in-one board with a P4 3.2ghz processor for $40.00AU (£24.00). They have trouble selling most of the Celeron boards, as there are so many available, ex-govt.
I'd be looking around your neck of the woods for something like that Elvis. That old dinosaur is only good enough for a paper weight, or Linux.

Yes it's tragically underpowered for XP and even most versions of Linux.
You'll need to look at the specialist micro distributions like Puppy, Unity or DSL (d**n Small Linux)
Puppy is favourite IMO, although you need to run it semi 'live' i.e boot from the CD every time with the settings and personal files kept on the hard drive. It works well enough like this and works even better if you make a Linux swap partition on the drive (1 GB should be plenty for that)

If you got XP on it Elvis, the other 4 will go on. W95 would work really good, but you would have to format the drive into 3 x 2 gig FAT16 partitions. You cant make FAT16 partitions bigger than 2 gig. The other 3 will go on, if you format the drive as FAT32.

There are plenty of second hand bargains to be found without buying a new one. Or even for free on sites like freecycle etc
Just put a wanted ad in, something along the lines of....
Wanted PC base unit to replace antique PII, doesn't have to be anything special, just a bit more modern
Thanks
Pity you don't live near here, I've got lots of spare base units but I've stopped giving them away on freecycle because I'm not impressed with people turning up in fancy cars and being barely grateful for my generosity - even had one cheeky sod phone up for another after they'd managed to break the first one I donated
