hello long time since I have posted here hope your all well, I have an IBM r50 It has decided that it is not going to connect wireless >so I have reset to factory settings using the inbuilt IBM restore and recovery ( it did not come with a recovery disc). I have booted it up took out all the unnecessary programs and installed AVG Free using a wired connection. the problem is that it will connect to the Internet wireless but only for about 30 seconds then it will loose connection. none of my other PCs have that problem. I have tried using the repair tab when you click on wireless icon which does work but only for 30 seconds or so. I think I may have a virus that AVG is not picking up or malware. it must be either attached to the registry or an ms windows file or the IBM protect and recover. I normally can fix anything but this one has got me confused. any help please

Have you got a Network socket on the Lappy if so connect to your router that way and see if you lose connection Hover your mouse over the Wireless Icon near the clock and see what the signal strength is and also what router you are connecting to, it maybe that the wireless receiving aspect is faulty.
I had a brand new Laptop which would only work 1 metre from the router. It turned out to be a broken connection to the aerial in the lid
What other wireless systems in your immediate area, are you actually comnnected to your own router or have picked up some other wireless router running without encryption. Try changing the wireless channel number in your router as it may be conflicting with another router in neighbourhood

I am thinking do I spend money on it by taking it to a repair shop or do I buy a new lappy(it's 4 years old)

I would get rid of AVG for a start, install Avast and see if you get any bother then. It will probably be OK, but if its not let us know. I might have another trick or two up my sleeve, before you spend any money.

well got it running sweetly now. I know what messes it up Facebook and the wife playing all the games on it and people sending you things all the time, my netbook has no problems but she does not touch that or the lappy now .lol. how did I do it. I used the wireless zero config did not work, tried a factory reset did not work then i did a system restore and the hidden (innocent HA HA HA ) program popped up sayng would i like to install. So straight into reg edit and removed it all clear works fine I would never have found it but I have traced where it comes from and (you guessed it) facebook. thanksfor the advice about AGV KC TTFN

Pleased you sorted it out Soupy. I would definately get rid of AVG though. Laptops are not the most powerful machines, particularly anything over 2 years old. AVG is like trying to swim carrying an anvil, Avast is much lighter on resources. If you only use it on your home network and not on public networks, you dont need a firewall. As long as you have got the security set up on your router that is.
