Hmm, a genuine service by Microsoft or another way to check for pirate copies of Windows? or are they frightened of the ever growing reputation of OpenOffice?
... and will it remain free
More importantly, will it rain today ?

It is only a very small sample of Office and they already allow you to download the readers for free. They have been talking about having Office Online for several years, where you can rent any part of Office for a set amount of time and this is probably just a test run. There isn't any Publisher, so you cant do very much with it. Even card making has to be done with Publisher now, whereas before you could make cards with Word. You can still make cards with Word, if you know what your doing. It a bit different from just selecting a template. Even the bits they are offering are not fully featured, so they will be about as basic as they can make it. Open Office is useful, but its not a patch on MS Office and this offering is about the same as Open Office. Therefore they haven't given you anything you cant get for free anyway.

Not a patch on M$Office? in what way? Most people (including me) barely use 10% of M$Office features and OpenOffice seems to include most of the stuff anyway. Take word processing as an example - what does the average user need to do? 1) have a choice of fonts in various sizes - sorted 2) the ability to spell check - no problem 3) bullet points and other formatting - yup 4) add tables - yup that too 5) start to use a few more advanced features like mail merge - that's covered as well That would keep the majority quite happy If you need more templates you can always get the oxygen version downloads.sourceforge.net/project/ooop/Binary-Windows32bit/3.2.0.20/OOo_3.2.0_100227_Win32Intel_install_en-US_de_hu_it_fr.exe?use_mirror=garr

If I only had Publisher, I would be happy and Open Office is useless for Desktop Publishing. Open Office is probably fine for the average user, but its about as good as a chocolate rocking horse to me. There are people who use computers for more than just writing documents and doing spead sheets. Everything has got its uses to someone and I need MS Office. Now MS have given everyone the same as Open Office and they dont need to download it. I dont need templates, as I make my own, but they are useful for a lot of people. Since Win7 come out, I cant see any point of have to mess around with Linux. Whatever floats your boat, masochists have to have a life as well. I would rather switch on my computer and know I've got a working OS that boots in a few seconds. I've got an Office that does everything I want and I've only got a small part of it installed. I dont even know what most of the full suite does. I could always put the rest on if ever I throw a fit and decide to become educated. As long as it doesn't take a nose dive, Windows 7 and Office 2010, is about as near to perfect setup as you can get. Perhaps Linux is more secure for now; but people who suffer from viruses, bring it on themselves most of the time.

OK, you win - you're more like Victor Meldrew than me :-p
I thought I was a contender, I had dreams of being the grumpy old man of the forum, but no, you wouldn't let it lie and shattered my dreams forever.
Sheesh, I'll probably have to adopt a new persona and actually be nice to people
You're a cruel man, but I bow to your superior skills

Very good Lynnrose, I love it.
Pity Mikk dont drink, he would be right at home with some of my drinking partners. One of them even brings his wife with him to make sure the moaning level doesn't drop. Even so one of them has changed pubs, to where he claims the standard of moaning is better. Cant see it myself, dont matter where I go everybody starts moaning as soon as I walk in.
