H! Mikkh,
I have just seen this and it seems i am only using 3.9 gig of memory i thought Linux 64 bit would use all 4 gig of memory ?

It might just be monitors not right Elvis and you have got the full 4 gig. You need an analiser to tell you whats being read on both modules and they should be both the same. If one module is low, you have got a bad chip.

You can have 4 GB or above in a 32 bit linux system - providing you use a PAE (Physical Address Extension) kernel.
The 3.9 you have showing could be just a rounded down number, or you have on-board graphics stealing some of the system RAM.
Your kernel also states 'generic' so it might not be 64 bit at all. I'd have expected to see some mention of 64 bit in the kernel description

I thought it was 64bit but i will look in to it.
Thanks

This is my W7 32 bit
This is my Linux mint 64bit "or you have on-board graphics stealing some of the system RAM." I have a graphic card i will have to find out what it is but i think it is a 512 mb one that you recommended Mikkh ;D

Having a quick google around, I have to agree with one thing I found. It's just Linux being honest basically. No matter how much RAM you have - on any system, the total amount is just a meaningless figure anyway because it will never be all free for use as the operating system has to live somewhere.
Windows probably just rounds it up to show the user what they want to see and to stop irate calls to RAM manufacturers
You'll have anything from 300 MB up to a GB or more used by the running system, so you'll always be running a system with only 3.xx GB or even 2.xx GB of RAM available.
... in other words don't worry about it kiddo

I've got the same card (with 1 GB RAM) in my main PC. It behaves well with the newest Linux Nvidia driver and it's good enough for 'aero' in Windows 7 too.
I don't hold much store with Windows Experience Index - it's just a very basic benchmark, but I would be interested to know what score it gives your card against mine. They should be identical really because more RAM on a graphics card doesn't mean a lot usually (on the same model card)

"I would be interested to know what score it gives your card against mine" i will have a look and see how do i do it?, it was you that recommended the card to me and i have had no problems with it so far ;D
Just open the box with the new keyboard and mouse in it and there is no USB Receiver in it so i have just email them

What made you put a 32 bit Win7 on Elvis?? I wouldn't run 32 bit on a 64 bit macchine, I think of it as a step backwards. Sixty four bit is the only way to go now and I think the software will be catching up soon.
Heres my score, but my graphics cards are a little bit different.

Yes sorry kiddo, that was what I wanted to see on reply 11
and Ken - you poser :-p I see you've upgraded again to 6 core now, but you must be wondering what you have to do to get a 7+ score on the hard drive eh ;o)

I'm not running the latest graphics cards, I'm still using the dual Radeon HD4870's, which give me a score of .1 less than Ken's new monsters, and I definately don't have an SSD hard drive. Notice that Elvis and I both score the same on Hard Drive performance, we both have SATA III drives I guess. My Processor is a middle of the road Intel Quad core 8200, and my ram is 8gb of DDR3 1333 and not 1666 which the board will take, so i'm pretty happy with my scores on Windows Performance Index for an older machine.

The Samsung SSD has dropped off lately Mikk, it used to score 7.3 and I cant get it above 6.9 now. The Beast scores the full 7.9 for graphics with its Radeon HD 4870s, but they run too hot in a case and they try to cook the motherboard. The Super Beast has 2 Saphire HD 5830s and they run cool. The Phenom II x 6 1090T Thurban runs a little bit hotter than the Phenom II x 4 965, even with water cooling. Nothing serious, about 40° C against 30° C.

The Super Beast has got the Corsair Airflow 1866 MHz Kev and I'm not sure the gain was worth the expense.

I know what you mean Elvis; I got some older software that even works on XP x 64, but wont work with Win7.
Writing on this string I suddenly realised, the Samsung SSD hasn't lost anything and its never scored above 6.9 since I blew the board on The Beast. The motherboard that it was scoring higher was an Asus and now both the computers have Gigabyte boards. It looks like these new solidly built 2 oz copper Gigabyte boards, are slower than the Asus. The Beast has got a MA790X-UD3P AM2+ and the Super Beast has got the 890GPA-UD3H AM3. The fast board was Asus M3A79-T Deluxe AM2+.

My board is an ASUS P5Q3 Deluxe Ken. I won't buy any other board for top end stuff than ASUS. They kick all the others butts.

When I built the Super Beast Kev, the Gigabyte 890GPA-UD3H AM3 was the only board to support the x 6 Thurban core processors. It having the 2 x USB3 ports was an added attraction. Having the 1866 MHz memory, I thought it would be the top board. It still reads like its got the top specs on the market, but I dont think its as good as it should be and I'm sure an Asus with the same specs would beat it. They just didn't have anything to match at the time. Its still a brilliant machine though, but I will go back to Asus for the 12 core. LOL...................
PS: Ubuntu x 64 ran like a slug on it.

Finally got round to booting Windows 7
Elvis 9400 GT 512 MB = 4.7 (Aero) 5.8 (gaming)
Mikkh 9400 GT 1 GB = 4.4 (Areo) 5.7 (gaming)
My hard drive speed is the same, but both my CPU and RAM are slightly slower
Interesting results though and more proof of what I already knew - that more RAM on the same model card makes little or no difference and can actually be slower.
... and I recently added a 1 GB low speed (for DDR2 anyway) stick of RAM to the medium speed 2 GB one that was already there. The rating went down 0.2 points which was less than I expected

"PS: Ubuntu x 64 ran like a slug on it. " Careful, you're in danger of dragging this back on topic :-p I presume that was a live CD though or installed 'wubi' style in a Windows partition? Linux is good at keeping up with security fixes, but can be a little slow sometimes supporting the latest hardware. You're probably only one of a handful who have tried it on such cutting edge hardware, so it may take a while before the kernel gets any additions it needs to fully support it. Ubuntu is over hyped anyway and based on the conservative Debian kernel - so it wouldn't be my choice for testing new gear. www.mirrorservice.org/sites/mepis.org/released/SimplyMEPIS-USB_8.5.03-rel1_64.isomight be a better choice. ... and ATI/AMD cards are generally the poor cousins to Nvidia in terms of driver support, although they're catching up fast and not the joke they were several years ago. I still instinctively buy Nvidia cards though because of that

I used to run Mepis some years back Mikk, on an AMD Athlon 3200+, 2 gig RAM and it worked fine. I tried several distros at that time and Mepis was my favourite.

The way these new Viruses/trojans are going, we may all be forced into using Linux soon. God they are getting bad. They are totally screwing up all Windows based computers. ( Kev rubs his hands with glee )

If you installed the N thing or McAffee on all your customers computer, you could really be busy Kev. Give them AdAware as a antispyware, you cant go wrong.

H! Mikkh,
Yes i now what you mean about the memory on the cards peapol have told me the same thing as you have told me but i only need one card not like KC who has two cards in his ;D greedy man i did download Mepis but have not tried it yet whats this (Aero) all about?

It's Windows half hearted attempt to beat what Linux has had for years - fancy desktop effects basically
Here's what Aero wishes it could do...
