I've given up on the Ubuntu forums. Basically I have no sound anymore. Lost it about 3 days ago, probably when I was trying to get my message modem to work. cat /proc/asound/card*/codec* | grep Codec cat: /proc/asound/card*/codec*: No such file or directory brafferton@office:~$ grep Codec /proc/asound/card0/codec* grep: /proc/asound/card0/codec*: No such file or directory My story so far is: ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=9013704#post9013704I'm dying for another ciggie... Just a quick note Lynnrose, I've been a member since 2004, what happened? did someone report me dead?

To answer your last question first (on the ubuntu forums) 'emerge' is the Gentoo variant of apt-get install for Debian systems i.e it's a package manager command for downloading software
Instead of emerge alsa-lib, you should use apt-get install alsa-lib in Debian
Or better still, just use synaptic and search for alsa
Look for gnome-alsamixer or (sometimes called) alsamixer-gui while you're in synaptic, it has much more control over the various channels you can change

Well anyway,
Methinks the problem was the hard drive. I've binned it and got myself a new one for 29 squid 130GB, not bad.
I've spent the last 6 hours getting all my old files and bookings, emails, background, fax, blah, blah back on.
Now I have to start a new thread on how to get my server back on. Can never remember how to do that!
