Ken - thanks. Yes I know that article is dated December 2009 but the current problem that has been brought to my attention has occured 3 times in the past 10 days.
It smacked to me as false positives!! Since it only happens infrequently and yet to no other members of the group in question who also use Avast I am wondering if it may be as a result of said member having an infection from a previously infected email and hence it is genuine protection at work, except for the fact full scans indicate the machine is clear?
I will seek clarification on this post - haste.

Dunno Buzzy, I've not had any false positives. Anyway I think I would rather have a false positive or two, than a bloody great worm chew my system up. If your not sure about something you can quarantine it and ask Avast about it. If its quarantined and something stops working, well its a false positive.

I use Avast and am impressed with the newish 'orange' version.Do I need Super anti-spyware that I still have?
ps I would just like to say although I have been an infrequent user and even rarer poster on here I have to thank you all for giving me the best insight I have had anywhere on computers. As someone with limited knowledge of all things computer this site was an invaluable aid when I first started about eight years ago. Thanks

Yes you do, although Avast can detect some malware/spyware/adware it concentrates mostly on viruses, so it would be wise to keep SAS as well for more complete protection. Nothing is 100% protection though, so don't go looking for the mythical combination that protects against everything - it doesn't (and probably never will) exist
Don't be a stranger. Lack of computer knowledge doesn't matter - we value all opinions to give a more rounded site. If it was full of experts it would be boring
