A new version of Avast is available The familiar blue livery has been changed to orange for some reason The voice that tells you you've been updated is now female The two icons in the tray is now one - good thinking The install is faster and doesn't beg for a reboot anymore The registration is more streamlined and easier. All looking good so far A more complete review here www.daemonnews.org/2010/01/19/avast-5-gets-a-new-look-finally.html

I have got it on both The Beast and my laptop Mikk. I installed it when it came out about a week ago and its working fine. The new voice isn't as creepy as the old one. I like the streamlined installation, its a bit more civilised than before.

It updates itself Elvis, unless its changed Avira free doesn't. I have never used Avira, but I have heard good things about it. The auto-updating or lack of it, is the only complaint I have heard about it. I've used Avast since XP x 64 came out in BETA, they were the only company who took 64 bit seriously. In all these years I have never had any trouble with it. When Win7 came out in BETA, it went straight on like it was made for it.

What a pain installing Avast 5 has been for me this afternoon Nothing I did seemed to get the new version up and running, just kept getting an RPC error and Avast was still showing as 'blue' instead of 'orange' Did all the usual stuff, re-booting etc. Tried to uninstall Avast 4.8, wouldn't let me, not even in safe mode or using CCleaner System Restore no use Also lost the use of Windows Live Mail for some strange reason, so I had to re-install it Anyway, re-installed version 5 again and it is now orange, but have yet to hear the female voice The only thing now is that I have an exclamation mark on Avast icon The programme says that 'your system is not fully protected.' My 'Real-time' shields' cannot be turned on and unable to use the 'Fix Now' button, so I am presuming that I need to enter the registration key for Avast to be working properly.............but the email with the key has just arrived and the instructions are for the 'old' Avast on how to enter key, so where do I put in the key?

You dont need to put a number in now Lynnrose, thats only for the Pro version now. The free one you click the icon and open it and click on Register. Then put in your name and email address and its registered. Theres none of the old copy and paste from an email anymore.

I dont understand whats gone wrong with yours Lynnrose, Ive not had any problem with either installation. It should all work fine without registering, you get a few days to try it out before you have to register it. I didn't have to uninstall the old version, it just offered me the upgrade and I clicked on the popup. It then uninstalled the old and put on the new.

Avast didn't offer me an upgrade, I had to seek it out myself ~ Vista laptop ~ I haven't tried it on my XP main PC yet It still won't let me turn on the mail shield, so I think I will go back to version 4.8

Sounds like it might be safer waiting on it asking you to upgrade then I think I may wait after reading Lynnrose's post I will just have to be patient ;D Thanks for the warning Lynnrose also thanks for the information Mikkh and Ken at least I know to take it when it does offer the upgrade thanks ;D

Maybe the new one has been made for Win7 and its not sorted out properly for XP yet. It offered me an upgrade the day it came out and it looks like they are not offering it to XP users. There are quite a few people complaining about BSODs with it and they are all from people running XP and Vista. The forums are advising XP and Vista users to hold off on installing it just yet. So it would be better to continue using v.4.8 on XP and Vista, until you get offered the upgrade. Its supposed to be the finished article and not a BETA and they are advertising it for 2K, XP, Vista and Win7. 32 and 64 bit of the latter 3.

KC I have windows 7 on my PC and this wee notebook as well ;D and I have not as yet been offered an upgrade on either. After Lynnrose had hassles I will wait on the offer first but I don't think it is anything to do with what version OS you have or they may have offered me it by now, just thought I would mention this to see if there was another reason.

That's a shame you've had trouble with it Lynnrose.
I should perhaps have mentioned it was several clean installs I did - for other people, replacing the Norton 'free' trial in most cases
In fact I thought I was being scammed at first, after being offered the orange version
I use Linux 99% of the time now, and I don't bother protecting my Windows partition at all because I only use it for offline games and can't be doing with updating it constantly

Anyone who is suffering from freezing since upgrading:
Open Avast, Settings, Troubleshoot and turn off the Self Defence Module.
They claim that is the problem with it and turning it off corrects the problem.

This is the answer I gave Elvis on the other site. I will post it here as well as it might be of interest to someone.
I have turned it off on The Beast now Elvis. As you know I've got a couple of problems with it and I don't want to make things worse. I have left it alone on the laptop, just to see what happens. So far the laptop is working fine with everything engaged, so it would seem its only with XP and Vista. The laptop is using Win7 Home Premium x 64. Its an Intel Core 2 Duo 1.66MHz with 4 gig RAM, so its not exactly a slouch. Also some of the people who are getting the trouble, don't say what they are running. I've got a suspicion they are people running stuff on underpowered machines. People are still running XP with insufficient RAM and others have downgraded to Visa on machines built for XP. Or for that matter bought machines with Vista, that were only built for XP.

I've not got an answer for Lynnrose as her trouble is completely different to everyone else. It just wont install properly, which obviously has nothing to do with the Self Defence Module. I would throw that download away if you have saved it Lynnrose. Next time try a fresh download, it might have got corrupted. Last night when I booted up the laptop, Avast downloaded a patch and the Avast 5 has got a different number after it now. It hasn't got exacty the same 5 version now, as the one that was causing the trouble. I dont know if that was a cure, it didn't say. Avast do know about it and are trying to correct the problem, thats all I know at the moment.

I have been on avast 5 for a few weeks now, and have had no problems so far. I am on win7 home premium 64bit. Think avast 5 is a good upgrade from last version, as is more straight forward in use.

I have been apprised of a problem with what seems to be 'False Positives' from a couple of members of another Forum I subscribe to. From a personal point of view I have not experienced problems (yet). Apparently back in December 2009 there was an 'iffy' update but they fixed that. The-Avast-Problem-105773Has anyone had any such similar problems - recently?

That report is dated 2nd Dec 2009 Buzz, a lot of things have gone on since then. I'm running v.5 on my Windows 7 x 64 on 3 machines without any problems. I have still got v.4.8 on XP x 64, but only because I haven't used XP since about December. When I get round to running my older sims that dont work on Win7, I will update the XP to v.5 as well.
