Linux Mint 9: “Isadora” Wed, 27 Jan 2010 15:18:12 +0000 Linux Mint 9, based on the upcoming Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx, will be released in May this year under the codename “Isadora”. Of Greco-Latin origin, “Isadora” means “Gift from Isis”.

Well it's not out till May, but yes, Linux releases seem to be coming thick and fast just recently Windows XP is nearly 10 years old, but still being used by at least 40% of Windows users (rough guess on what I see on my travels) and it's still perfectly adequate for a lot of people. Go back 10 years in Linux history and you'll find no mention of Ubuntu or Mint because they didn't even exist then. What you would find is Red Hat dominating the business sector - and it still does as far as I'm aware. With Suse and Mandrake (now Mandriva) being the main choices for home computers. New releases were mostly yearly or longer apart and people didn't rush to upgrade, because there was no point - much like XP users refusing to go the Vista route just for the sake of it. I've just googled Mint 9 and came across this rather inane blog www.linuxmint.com/blog/?p=1253Where they're all chuffed with the codename and debating the source of it - makes you proud to be a Linux user !! If Mint 8 (or even 6 or 7) works for you, then stick with it. The only reason I can see to upgrade, is if you need some hardware support that isn't included in a previous version.

Microsoft have never been fully associated with any Linux - they wouldn't dare because it would be an admission it exists and a serious rival. They have got links with Novell who have an active part in the Suse distribution, but a pure M$ Linux has never been comissioned
As for the silly boys and girls on that blog - I'll be shipping them a real life in the next available post
