As Roz says you can mess with them forever Phoney and not lose any quality. The size difference is massive, but they are great for printing. I would never print from a JPEG, My scans are all saved as TIFF or PNG for decent printing. JPEG were only really for attaching to emails in the days of limited mailbox size. I always used JPEG for uploading, until Roz told me the other day you have to leave them as PNG or GIF if you want transparent background. You learn something every day in this group.

Well that explains why my animation efforts always lose quality especially when I use the Optimization Wizard. The palette seems to get totally distorted. I'll have a go with PNG and GIF and check out quality and file size. I suppose if every image submitted was a PNG then each page here would probably be over 100MB.

Your animation program probably already has a file type of it's own which wont lose quality Phoney. It's best to always use either the type native to the program your using, or TIFF's as Ken mentions, or good old fashioned bitmaps. Then just save another copy as a jpeg or gif depending on what it is, for the one to show online.

Thanks for that Roz, it was quite interesting.
All the Rasters I know have dreadlocks and do a lot of dope, why they would want to be converted to Vectorism I dont know. I'm still not sure what the difference between a raster layer and a vector layer is. Is a rastor layer a perminant layer like a background and a vector layer anything you add onto it??? Over time I have found my own ways of doing things and I'm still not sure what the hell I'm doing. I got a big thick manual with PSP Photo x 2, it looks like I will have to start reading it. Last night I found out why Amazon were selling Photo x 2 cheap, Coral have just brought out Photo x 3. Never mind, I will probably never even master x 2.

Some good advice there Roz, thank you. Did this in Paint Shop, used the Weave texture effect. ;D

A raster image is the same as a pixel based image Ken, but a vector image is based on geometric lines.
Photoshop and PSP are both raster editing programs, (paint type) programs, but they have some vector capabilty. But drawing, rather than painting or photographic editing programs, work by creating vector images. Adobe Illustrator among others is a vector program.
Going back to raster image editing, I don't use PSP so I don't know the terminology in that program. But you will be able to add straight lines and boxes and similar things where you manipulate them with handles. In Photoshop they're just called "shapes" and they are vector images which can't be edited pixel wise unless you either flatten or rasterise them.
I'm not the best at explaining such things lol, so I'll see if I can find a site which explains it better than I can.

Thanks very much Roz, that one makes a lot of sense and even I can understand it. I have got it printing as I type. Here is another of my efforts. Its made from PNG images so I guess its a raster. I made a copy reduced to a JPEG for putting on here, so I guess thats a raster too.

That's a really nice composition Ken, smashing snakeskin effect too.

You're welcome. If you or anybody else is interested in trying a vector drawing program, Inkscape is a free open source one, and pretty good from all accounts too. That's really nice Ken, I like it. All the artwork on here is pretty good too, well done all.

I dont remember how I produced that snakeskin Nocky. I just tried to do it again and couldn't. I put in some texture and it turned into snakeskin when I turned it into a pentogram. I think I used a mosaic then I added something before changing the shape. It was an accident anyway. Thanks Roz, I will have a better look at that Inkscape later. Just trying a different slant on the same theme.

Another good effort Ken, I like that a lot.
As for not remembering how you got a particular effect, I do that all the time. I've got a load of "one of" goodies that I can't repeat,'cos I don't remember how I did'em. ;D

Which makes me wonder if nobody has created a track changes function, like the one you get in word; I know you can create a file by recording and saving a script to be repeated, but that creates the same thing every time.
As far as I can see the only ways are to record physically each step, then remove the ones that don't work, or take screen shots, like they use in tutorials.
