Not sure what the shield means? What email programme are you using? If it has an attachment, you could right-click the attachment, save to your desktop and then right-click that and choose scan with your anti-virus.

What anti-virus do you run? Mine scans emails when they arrive automatically. Have you seen the shield before?

One tip for Outlook Express is to read email messages in plain text....
"Read messages from unknown sources in plain text. To read your e-mail messages in plain text, in Outlook Express, on the Tools menu, click Options. On the Read tab, select the Read all messages in plain text check box. In an individual message, you can switch back to HTML by clicking the View menu and then clicking Read in HTML."

Windows says that all the time.
The problem with Windows security is it is so up-tight that it has lost credability.
Almost every program I run, almost every file I open from almost any source is preceeded by a warning from Windows that it may be a security risk.
Generally, the only things it doesn't say are a security risk are Windows stuff itself.
There is no easy answer to the problem of rogues getting onto your computer. But a few things may halp ease your mind.
1. Virus' are very rare. Most of the virus writers have moved onto spyware.
2. There is very little you can do about spyware other than remove it after it's installed. Plenty of good programs available free. People on here can tell you which. I never pay.
3. Provided you stay away from prono sites and those offering illegal activities, your chances of getting any nasties on your computer from surfing are very remote.
4. Only open email you recognise. Delete any advertising, anything offering to improve your sex life, anything saying 'Hey!', 'Hi Again', 'About your order', You have come into some money and so on.
Some may disagree with me on this. But I find sensible precautions are adequate.

PLEASE READ THIS AND DIGEST. THERE IS A VIRUS HEADING YOUR WAY. IT HAS TO BE TRUE BECAUSE WHENEVER THERE IS A ONE IN TRANSIT THE SENDERS LET EVERYONE KNOW. I MEAN IF YOU WANTED TO RUIN SOMEONES COMPUTER PROGRAMMING YOU WOULD TELL THEM WOULDN'T YOU ? SO IF YOU RECEIVE AN E MAIL EVEN IF IT'S FROM SOMEONE YOU KNOW AND IT IS SUBJECTED
"I AM A GOOD LOOKING 18 YEAR OLD VIRGIN AND HAVE BEEN STUDYING YOU FOR A WHILE WITH UNCONTROLLABLE PASSION TOWARDS YOUR IRRESISTABLE CHARM"
FOR GOODNESS SAKE WHATEVER YOU DO OPEN THE BLOODY THING IT COULD BE YOUR LAST ADMIRER. YOU MIGHT CATCH A VIRUS BUT WITH A LITTLE LUCK YOU MAY RECOVER AND BESIDES, IT WILL BE WORTH IT. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED !
BILL GATES, THE SAS, YAHOO, GOOGLE, WILL TELL YOU TO IGNORE AND DELETE IMMEDIATELY BUT THIS IS BECAUSE THEY DON'T WANT YOU TO GET WHAT THEY ARE MISSING. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED !
