My bank is offering me security software that they say will make the online banking safer; should I get it?

Providing its a genuine offer from your bank and not some scammer trying to get your details, I would go for it. I am with Natwest and there is additional security in that whenever I try to move money from my account to pay for my Barclaycard balance I have to put in extra user and password information before the transaction is completed. In addition if I am paying for something or moving money from one account to another, by quoting my debit card I have to get a special code from a small handheld device which reads my debit card and generates a code for that transaction.

I'll offer you some better security - use a Linux live CD
As for the banks offer, I'd leave it. If it's not a scam, and it does look dodgy, the onus is on them to provide better security their end - not fill your computer with bloat and then have a get out clause if it's not running for some reason
.... and then think about joining Natwest

But if you don't want to use Linux or change your bank to NatWest (Good Grief).
If you received the offer of security software in an email don't click on any links. Type in the URL of your bank and login and then you should be offered any additional security measures.

My Bank offers me McAfee free for one year... I use my own security and have done for years without problems.

It was not offered through email, it was on the front page of their website that I go to via my favourites, not email links. I have one of those card readers but am not sure how to use it. I would not go to Natwest after the way they treated my son.

I have a Nationwide card reader and use it all the time. When I transfer some money online, before the action is completed, I have to insert my card, tap in my pin number on the reader, tap in the reference code given on the Nationwide site, to my reader, then the reader gives me a passcode which I input on Nationwide website and that's it. Sounds complicated the way I have written it, but it isn't. Your bank must do it the same way I guess.

I have one for my Nationwide account as well, but as I only normally use online to see how much I have available and see up to date statements, I don't really use it.
