I just came across thisAny opinions? Prey is a lightweight application that will help you track and find your laptop if it ever gets stolen. It works in all operating systems and not only is it Open Source but also completely free.

The first thing the thieves do Lynnrose, is format the hard drive, including any hidden partitions. Probably not the thieves; most of those are junkies, but the fences do it. They put a cracked copy of XP on it and then flog it on. Unless you have it marked with magic water and the police find it, you can kiss it goodbye. Short of wiring it with an internal GPS tracker, theres not a lot of hope in getting it back.

Very true KC, but as the site mentioned the following, I guess there is a small chance that someone would get somewhere with it... "You may be thinking “but what’s the point of this program if the guy will probably just format the thing right away?” and you’re completely right. However, experience shows that thieves tend to look in stolen computers for valuable information, so there’s actually a chance you can catch the guy (and there’s even some succesful cases!)."

I suppose there might be a slight chance Lynnrose. They say as thick as thieves, but the thieves I know are not thick enough to actually put a stolen computer online. They are usually more interested in their next fix, than whats on the laptop. The fences who deal in stolen computers, are all totally computer savvy. They might have a look for anything that might bring them in a few bob, but they know exactly what they are doing. Any useful information can be printed off and used on a public computer.

Whether or not they re-format it isn't it best to use as much protection as possible? After all we all have locks on our doors but there are still people around who can pick them but we still try to protect our homes and cars.

Well its Open Source Rog and so its free. I expect a lot depends on where you live, but I wouldn't expect it to be any good around here. If someone ripped my house off; I wouldn't expect to get anything back, unless I acually caught them coming out. Then I would probably get done for murder and sued by the thieves families. Cars have got number plates, but they never stop them from burning out before the police find them.
