My Avast (home edition) icon has stopped moving and has a stop sign, red circle with a bar, on it.

Download Avast again, then uninstall it and run C Cleaner to clean up the system. Reinstall Avast and register it again. You should then be set up for another year and its much easier and faster than investigating what has gone wrong. Before reinstalling I would update and run Malwarebytes AntiMalware in Safe Mode, as some bad viruses will knock out your security first to protect itself.

I really must stop and think before I post. I downloaded a new version of Avast, installed it and bingo, working again.

Just remember you have to enter the registration number within 30 days, or it will switch off again.
