Hi all
I recently (a couple of months) downloaded and installed the free version of Avast AV. Now on boot up I get a nag screen telling me I only have 17 days left for my 'Trial' version of Avast. Any idea what is going on as I was under the impression that Avast free was just that, free, not just a limited trial.

Avast is free, but I think it is reminding you that you need to re-register and enter the registration key code emailed to you. You have to re-new the key every year. Take a look here

Couldn't find the registration email, so registered again, entered the reg key and all is now OK. Thanks Lynnrose, all sorted.

You get 30 days as a new user, and in that time you're supposed to register for a free yearly key - once you've put that in, there's no more nagging and they don't spam you either.
It's a slightly strange way of doing things, but the key is not machine specific and any valid key will do
This key I've used on dozens of machines and is one I carry around with me on my 'pendrive'
So if you're ultra cautious in giving out your email, this one will work. Or if you have a key already, feel free to share it with friends etc

I am now trying Avast, and seeing if it measures up to AVG, which I have always found to be very user friendly. When I first installed Avast it seemed it had not launched properly, but this sorted itself out when I did a restart, and all became clear. I could see I was protected, lucky because I was about to ditch it and go back to AVG. Just shows, we must give things a fair go aye. Pete.

Avast is much lighter on resources than AVG and better in my opinion for what its worth. I've used it for years, as it was the only one that worked on 64 bit for a long time. Thats about 6 years since XP 64 came out as BETA

I have just come to the end of my 1st year with Avast and got the reminder. The re-registration went without a hitch. I would not go back to AVG.

Thanks it is good to know that you all find it better than AVG, I like the way the voice comes up to say it has been updated, now that is cool. Big okay for Avast then!! I shall now install it in wifes computer too. Pete.

Do we need anything else besides Avast, like skybot, and adaware?

AdAware is past its sell by date. Super AntiSpyware and Malwarebytes AntiMalware are the 2 to use. Spyware Blaster is a good one to have running in the background. Along with Avast you will be well set up then.

Spybot and Adaware are well past their use by date Pete. Most of us now use the free versions of SUPERAntispyware, and Malawarebytes Anti-malware, with SpywareBlaster for good measure. Just google for them.
Ya beat me by two minutes KC... lol

Great minds think alike Kev.
If your not behind a harware firewall Pete, I recommend using Comodo. It comes as a full suite, so you have to make sure you only install the firewall part.
