I tried Mcafee download again but no joy - so - I downloaded the free AVAST I dont know how good this is and I dont know if I should have perservered with Mcafee really as if there is a threat I should rectify the matter properly - Mcafee have 4 components 3 were successful but one (the virus scan) was not! How good is AVAST?
Also where you have a little green man with messenger in the bottom bar we now have two - one has a red x over him and we have to ignore him and exit the other is windows live and working ok. any ideas how I get rid of the one I dont want please? - I dont want to remove the wrong one! tia Ann

Avast is plenty good enough IMO and much lighter in resource use than McAfee - which I would remove immediately and chalk down to experience.
One of your messengers is probably Windows messenger (the one that comes with XP) rather than live messenger. The newer live messenger icon is two 'men' (green and blue) rather than one green one in the older version.
Go to Start/Run and type in...
msconfig
Go the startup tab at the top and take the tick out of one of the messenger entries - reboot and see if you got lucky first time. Ignore the warning 'you have used msconfig' and remove the tick from 'show me this again'
While you're in there remove any McAfee entries too - there's probably 4 or more of those which should disappear when you uninstall it, but often don't

..... You can obviously put the tick back in if you get it wrong, which is why I suggest doing it the msconfig way rather than via several alternative ways.
There shouldn't be anything in there that will stop the PC running, so don't be afraid to experiment - you can always re-tick things

I think Avast is the best free AV and its much better than a lot of the paid for AVs. McAfee used to be good many years ago, but got left well behind. They used to do some good stand alone bug removers, but I think they have been superseded by Super AntiSpyware and Malwarebytes AntiMalware. You might need a stand alone app for the odd super bug, but they will remove 99% of nasties. An AV alone cant stop sneaky Trojans and things,

Didnt have much joy - I did get rid of Mcafee it was in all programmes so I asked to remove it - as for the green man with red x (messenger) followed your instructs Ken and it doesnt matter what ticks I take out or put in the second man with the red x is still there - when I look in add remove it isnt appearing there, bit of a mystery really but the good news is - we can get into hotmail inbox and into windows live messenger - just have to ignore the other one and exit, I get an error message when it first comes up saying we cant connect you messenger not available but 8000401a doesnt appear when I ask for details - any other ideas would be appreciated the red x man is annoying me just a bit tia Ann

If you have 2 green men on your action bar near clock then you are probably running the old MSN messenger and the Windows Live messenger, as you can only be logged into one of them the other will have the red X against it. run configsys look in startup and look for MSN Messenger and remove the tick against it. Then it won't start Graham

If you go into Control Panel, Add & Remove Programs, Windows Components and take the tick out of Windows Messenger, it will take it right off your computer.
