Hi everyone. I recently bought and installed an Epson SX200 Printer/scanner/copier and loaded the software which came with it. I have been successfully using Epson File Manager to print photographs but cannot get other folders (My Pictures, My Documents etc) to open in there although they are showing on the side panel. When I try to print from the usual My Documents folder the whole computer freezes and the only way I can do anything at all is to swith off at the mains which I'm sure is not a good thing to do! I am confused! I am using WinXP Pro. I have unistalled Epson File Manager to see if things would revert to how they were before but no joy. The only thing that has happened recently is that IE 8 has been downloaded ... would a System Restore help do you think? I have to find a way to stop this computer freezing ... I cannot click on anything at all when it happens Hoping someone can start me off with a few suggestions! Thank you, Julie.

Whoah ... hold on! I should have experimented more before pestering you! I have discovered that I can print from the usual My Documents location if I open the file up to display the text but, if I right click a file or folder, as I would normally do, everything freezes. I will remember to open it up and it should be ok. Sorry to have jumped in! Julie.

I'd try getting rid of IE8 and see if that fixes it.
..... and you should never need to switch off at the mains - just hold in the power button for 3-5 seconds and it should switch off that way

This is driving me CRAZY!!! I have removed IE8 but nothing has changed. Another thing I have realised however is that I cannot copy any music files to another destination from My Music. This thread probably doesn't belong in this section ... sorry! It would seem that my problem is with copying and nothing to do with printing!

It sounds a bit like the computer I had to reinstall on Sunday. I think you have got something nasty running, to be quite honest. Also shutting it off at the wall, has probably left a mile of garbage in the system. You should download both Super AntiSpyware and Malwarebytes AntiMalware. Update them and boot into Safe Mode, then run both of them. Delete everything they find. Download C Cleaner and delete everything that finds. They are all free and you can find them with Google. When its all clean and free from bugs, type sfc /scannow into Run and push OK. There is a space between the sfc and /scannow. You will need to put your installation disk in for it to repair your system. Then keep your fingers crossed that its not too far shot, like the one I reinstalled on Sunday.

Thank you Ken ... I think you may be right. I tried to do a System Restore earlier and that froze everything too. I already have the Programs you mentioned and my last scans were on Sunday night. Will do as you say and hopefully be able to get back to you. I do not have installation disk though. Julie

The best you can do then Julie, is open My Computer. Right click on C: and select Properties, Tools, Check now on Error Checking and it will tell you it cant do it and to book a check for the next reboot. Click yes and reboot. Make sure you tick the two boxes on the checker, for it to try and repair.

Well my scans are complete but, before I report, can someone tell me if I get in to Safe Mode by hitting F8 during startup? If so, this brings up a black screen with no mention of Safe Mode but the option of booting from Floppy, USB, Maxtor or CDRom ... I chose Maxtor but couldn't see anything to show me that I was in Safe Mode.
Anyway, SuperAntiSpyware picked up the usual tracking cookies.I scanned with Malwarebytes and then used C Cleaner. I did an Avast thorough scan which took hours and hours and when finished this lists 728 Listed lines most of which say "unable to scan ... archive is password protected and the last one C Docs and Settings Content Server (1) ... unable to scan GZIP archive is corrupted.
Ken, I tried to follow your instructions to error check on reboot but got the message "cannot open volume ... Windows has finished checking" or something to that effect. I'm so confused!

You might be able to get into Safe Mode by pushing F5 Julie.
Your computer sounds exactly like my mates computer that I reinstalled on Sunday. I know what happened to that one and the main damage was done by a worm. I cleaned up the computer about 2 weeks ago and removed the worm are a variety of Trojans. I didn't have time to sort it out, but I was sure that it was clean. I told my mate what to check on, what to do and went home. He phoned me to say that his security wouldn't update and he couldn't install anything. When I went over on Sunday, everything was locked up tight and couldnt be entered even as administrator. Worms are not only destructive, they destroy to protect themselves and attack security first. It was a waste of time to try to repair it, I did a full format and reinstalled it. I am pretty sure the same has happened to yours, the 2 sound exactly the same. Going by the instructions that came up upon pushing F8, your machine has a makers restore system. I think you need to use the makers disk and reinstall it.
Safe Mode has probably been disabled by the nasty, as it's a simple way of getting into Administrators account.

Thanks so much for your post Ken despite the bad news! I don't have the installation disk so I'm going to take my pc to the local independent repair shop. Can I just ask what to do with all those files in Avast which couldn't be scanned ... the options I'm given under "Action" are Delete, Move or Chest. Or shall I just make the trip to the shop without doing anything else? Thanks again, Julie.

Just leave it as it is Julie. Tell the guy in the shop, to do a Full Format before reinstalling. Tell him you think you had a boot virus and a Quick Format isn't going to hack it. Otherwise he will probably just clone over the top and that wont kill anything lurking in the boot sector. Better be safe than sorry and its not as if he has to stand there and watch it format.
