John Lewis's store has produced a booklet called 'Make Do and Mend' on sale for £3 from 1st September It is an updated version 'for modern homes,' of the booklet produced in 1943, as 'part of a drive to help people cope with wartime supply shortages' The John Lewis version has some of the 'old' tips on saving money, but it also includes tips for modern times, 'such as performing a nightly phone 'charger check' to make sure they are not needlessly draining electricity' Anyway, I thought it might be interesting to see if any of you have tips on saving money around the home that your parents have maybe passed on to you and that you still carry on doing to this day, or anything else that you might think we would be interested in from the past or suitable for the present day. Dinner plates warm very effectively when used to replace the lid on a saucepan cooking vegetables; just ensure that the water is simmering first. You should also be able to turn the heat off a couple of minutes sooner, especially if it's an electric stove.
Save all cooked unserved veg, I'll be back with the recipes.

Bicarbonate of soda in a small cup or other container placed inside your microwave will clear smells.

Wash hairbrushes with the same shampoo you use for your hair....much easier to rinse.

I soak them in the stuff they use to clean artificial teeth, removes any grease.
Soak stained cups etc in Steradent type mixture; gets rid of all sorts of stains.
