I have Windows Update set to automatically install updates but I don't want IE8 yet as it appears 1000's of sites have compatability issues. According to ZDNET the list is getting longer daily. Automatic is the recommended setting, but if IE8 will be installed I think maybe I should change the setting to Download and then ASK before installing.

Yes, you (and everybody else) should, it's a leap of faith to blindly accept every update, and without being rude - it's also pure idleness and asking for trouble. This is the only truly critical update of the last few months support.microsoft.com/kb/962007So make sure you're all covered for that little time bomb - due to explode April 1st according to some experts But in direct answer to your question, no, IE8 would not be automatically installed You will be advised of it's benefits and a lot of PC magazines will encourage you to install it, but it won't be forced on you - well not for a few months anyway, when you start seeing 'this site requires IE8 to view it' type messages ...and I would take the thousands of sites having issues with it, with a big pinch of salt You know how the saying goes..... lies, d**n lies, and statistics - pure sensationalism and Microsoft bashing by Zdnet IMO Still, if it encourages a few more to try alternatives like Firefox or Opera, that can't be a bad thing either ;o)

Cheers, mikkh, can't see kb962007 in my updates but have kb958644 mentioned in article and not on a network so should be fine.
