It might vary with the version, but this should work...
Launch Internet Explorer
Click 'Tools' > 'Internet Options'
Click the 'Programs' tab.
Click the 'Make Default' button.

You should also not fall into the trap of pressing next, next etc when installing anything - you need to read first, especially the bits where there's a tick already in place as an option
In Firefox there was a tick in 'make Firefox the default browser' you should have un-ticked it then
A lot of software puts extra rubbish on this way - numerous toolbars get installed that way and they rarely, if ever have anything to do with the main program, it's just an affiliate program
If it gives you a choice, the chances are you don't want or need it
That is for everyone btw, not a personal dig
