Hi, Does anyone know anything about a virus called Generic!Artemis. When my McAfee does a scan it tells me I have 1 problem called Generic!Artemis and asks if I want to remove it. But when I click on 'Remove' McAfee tells me it 'Cannot be completely removed'
I've searched and read a few forums on this but still no further forward. When I go to the McAfee help site, all it tells me is that its a virus.. That its risk assessment is low and the date it was discovered..and thats it, nothing else. I can't find anything that will help me resolve the problem. I also did a free scan with Windows and it showed no problems at all.
I can use a computer ok but I'm not that good with computer problems. Would appreciate any help.. Thanks.

Download MalwareBytes' AntiMalware aka MBAM, save the file to your desktop. * Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program. * At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to the following: o Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware o Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware * Then click Finish. * If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install. * Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan. * When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results. * Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. Reboot as required post back and let us know

Hi, thank you for the reply. I haven't tried your solution yet but thought I'd first mention something I've found. After I've scanned the computer and click on the 'Generic!Artemis' problem that McAfee found, it tells me that its found in AppData Fun Web Products. I have found three folders in my c:\program files.. One saying FunWebProducts..one saying Images and the last one Screensaver. I clicked on properties but it shows they are all empty. I also searched in registry and found two entries saying Fun Web Products..(with two sub folders each).. and another one saying MyWebSearch..(also with two sub folders) which I saw was mentioned as part of the FunWebProducts on a help site called pchell. I wondered if these might be the problem and parts that McAfee cannot remove..and if it would be safe to delete them. None of these show up on my installed programs as suggested on the pchell site. Any ideas on this? Thanks again

Both Fun Web and My Web Search are known nasties that are best removed. They slow your computer down, monitor your every move while you are online, and send the info back to a harvesting site so that 3rd parties can target you for their advertising spam. They are best avoided at all costs. SUPERAntiSpyware FREE edition will get rid of them both. www.superantispyware.com/superantispywarefreevspro.html
McAfee does nothing to stop these sorts of things installing themselves on your computer, and it's a resource hog to boot, as well as being difficult to remove from your computer. Most of us are using Avast Anti-Virus, which is FREE, and Comodo as the firewall, which is also FREE, along with a couple of others like SAS.

If you have been installing screensavers; be warned most of the pretty ones, are distributed by Funweb and Smilie Central. Download anything from them 2 companies and you are deliberately infecting your computer.

Thanks to you all for the replies I'm always worried about installing or changing anything on my computer, as I'm not good with fixing problems with it. I'll try your suggestions and let you know what happens. Hi Ken.. I've never ever installed any screensavers on my computer from anywhere, or anything from these sites, so I have no idea where they came from, or even what they were. Thanks again

Hi
I downloaded SUPERAntiSpyware and scanned my computer. It found the Generic!Artemis virus and files of Fun Web products in my program files. (Which I still dont know why or how they are on my computer.) It offered to quarantine them and remove them, which I did, then I scanned my computer again. All the second SUPERAntiSpyware scan came up with was adware cookies. But my McAfee scan comes up with Artemis!BAFE1C90D179 and says its a potentially unwanted program. When I click to remove it, it still says cannot be completely removed. It says the item is AppData\FunWebProducts\installr\cache I dont know what this is but I can still see 2 FunWebProducts files with 2 sub files each in my registry.. the first one says Data and Settings.. and the second one says Installer and Settings.
I want to find out what it is but I dont want to click on these files incase I open up something that I shouldn't. Is there any way I can find out why they are there and what they are used for without opening them up? And is it safe to delete these files from my registry? Thanks

Did you ever install Smiley Central?
Did you do your virus scan in safe mode?
Did you try MalwareBytes?
You could do a HijackThis scan and post the log here
Try the suggestions here...this one, scoll down

Just right click and delete those Funweb entries Curly. Thats as long as they are not in Add & Remove Programs. If they are in Add & Remove, remove them there first and delete the entries if they are still there afterwards. They probably will still be there, coz I think you have found the installation files and not the active product. They need to be gone, no matter what they are.
McAffee isnt very good anyway and you would be better off uninstalling it and replacing it with Avast. However most antivirus programs cant get rid of Trojans, only quarrantine them. Malwarebytes AntiMalware will remove them and repair the files. SAS is very good and has probably cleaned the system. I would still run Malwarebytes, as its a more powerful application.
