Start > Control Panel > Security > Security Center When I looked at this all lights were GREEN but then you click the dropdown for Firewall and it said Windows Firewall is ON and McAfee Firewall is ON. There was a message saying 2 or more Firewalls on at the same time can cause conflict. The Windows Vista magazine I bought recommends turning off the Windows Firewall, which I did. Which firewall would you recommend running with? Windows or your antivirus software.

You seem to be confused about what a firewall is, or your end comment is badly phrased
A security suite from McAfee, Norton etc may contain firewall, antivirus and anti malware programs - but they are separate things usually, doing separate jobs, so I assume you're really asking should I use McAfee because I already have their internet security suite installed? Sorry if that sounds a bit petty and pedantic, but I like to be sure of these things.
The direct answer is yes, you should turn off Windows firewall, if you have it covered already by what is undoubtedly a better program (the XP firewall is very basic)
On the other hand, if you use a hardware firewall (router) then I would not have a bloated application like McAfee or Norton firewall running at all and would just leave the XP firewall on as a bit of extra insurance - and to stop Windows whinging about no firewall being on.
A router is the better option, and allows easy sharing of internet access (wired and wireless), while using no resources and does not require yearly updates. Routers have never been so cheap either - typically around £30

I'll go with 'badly phrased', although the only reason I'm running McAfee is because it came with a months free trial on the laptop. I have until 12/03 to decide which way to go. I'll check out the router suggestion. Reading threads on vistax64.com you find arguments for and against practically everything. Some swear by one application and some by another and all posters swear at each other (joke). Off topic this thread might be worth reading: www.vistax64.com/vista-news/200742-adobe-flash-silent-privacy-killer.html

I'd decide now then, if I was you. A months free trial is a bit mean anyway, you always used to get 3 or even 6 months. There are plenty of free alternatives that are just as good and a lot lighter on system resources. A combination of Avast and Comodo firewall is probably the best for use without a router
... and yes everyone has their opinion, but only I'm right lol ;o)

I agree with Mikk, I use Avast and Comodo on my laptop. My laptop isn't always behind a hardware firewall and Windows firewall is turned off. I just leave Windows firewall on with this computer, as its behind a router all the time.
McAffee used to be good a lot of years ago and they still make some good stand alone specialised bug removers. The security suite however is well past its sell by date.
