Someone said to me that there is now an AVG 8.5 but on googling it i think its to do with ID Security and is not a new anti-virus program. The guy reckons hes a bit of a PC genius but i have my doubts What do you think is he right

Current free AVG version is 8.5.278Personally I wouldnt touch it anymore, the application has become far too bloated. Avast is far more superior in my opinion and is less of a resource hog too

Seconded, it's bloated and offers only basic protection anyway
... and anyone claiming to be a PC expert wouldn't recommend it either

I have to agree with everyone else on this thread, I stopped using it when it went to 8.5 it slows down your machine others do a better job and do not use as many resources.

I think everyone has used AVG at some time as it was free. I thought some years ago it was getting left behind. When it was obvious that others were offering a better product for free, they tried to catch up. Instead of building a new product, they cobbled together a load of old technology and it didn't work. There isn't any need to use the old type bloated programs now, theres good stuff being given away.

Yes it's bloated and not very good either. I've just taken my daughter back and their PC was infected, so I sorted it out for them - it was being 'protected' by AVG !
Ran hijackthis, installed MBAM, scanned it, cleaned it (having already uninstalled AVG) and put Avast on instead. Tweaked it for good measure and it's now running at twice the speed. Pity about the abysmal ADSL connection they have - even I can't fix that
