A friend of mine needs to remove Norton and I am trying to advise her from a distance. I have found the link to the Symantec Norton removal tool but apart from removing Norton as I know it will, is there anything else to be done? I'm thinking registry. According to her Norton seems to have created a lot of folders 'everywhere' which is not really helping me at this point.
Would it be better to advise her to install AVG to replace Norton? I am yet to find out what firewall she is using.

The norton removal tool tidies up the registry too, so there's no need to worry on that score. As for folders left behind, they won't be taking too much room up, so not really worth hunting down, but if you feel like trying, the 'common files' folder holds a few symantec/norton files which most people miss
And no, AVG in it's current bloated version 8 format is not a good substitute - for anything really Avast is the free checker of choice nowadays, slimmer and more importantly, does a better job

Pleased about norton, I thought there would be a residue everywhere. As to avast then I'll certainly suggest that to her. Thank you Mikkh.

I used the Norton uninstaller on a friends computer today and everything went as smooth as silk. SAS and MBAM got rid of all the nasties that the N thing had let on. I cleaned up the system before I removed Norton and then checked afterwards and, the registry was clean.

Its getting worse! I now find out that its Norton Ghost that she's got which is "creating folders everywhere" (so she says) as far as I understand ghost will create a secondary partition and I would assume she has it set to daily full backups rather than incremental ones. I really don't know but it seems to me that ghost is better left alone possibly? I would understand it better if she had Acronis as I have that program, but I don't understand or know anything about ghost at all.

You will find that the Norton removal tool won't work until Ghost is uninstalled. I have just gone through that exercise two days ago on a customers computer. I ended up having to remove Ghost and it's hangers on in safe mode.

Thank you Nike and thank you Ken.
I know you used to use Ghost Nike, what are your views on the program? I personally don't like it and I was using Acronis (until it messed up my system or caused a lot of problems even after patches were installed) I don't know how my friend has ended up with ghost unless it was installed for her.
I do see the sense of having some sort of back up system though, I do have a seperate hard drive and my incremental backups were going to that and I found it easier to know where they all were and not having a partitioned drive C on my XP.
So, I am urging her to get rid of ghost but I think she needs a good alternative, as do I by the looks of it as my Acronis simply hates me.

Change over to Windows7 RC1 Von, its got a built in backup program if you have got a partitioned hard drive, or more than one. You can even use it to backup to DVDs and make a restore disk. Thats a lot better than System Restore.

You must have mistaken me for someone else Musky, i've NEVER used Ghost. I refuse to have anything to do with "Symantec" or ANY of their programs. I've always been an Acronis supporter, never had a problem with it, and would recommend it above Ghost anyday.

It's always been referred to as "N", ever since way before I started the current NHI group so long ago. It's always been a crap program as far as i'm concerned. Bloatware at it's worst, and it doesn't even work well compared to Avast, SAS, and Comodo.. JMHO, and if i'm out of line by berating this program on this site Lynnrose, please feel free to delete my post.

This is the right place to give people a professional opinion Kev. Whether they take any notice or not, is up to them.

Ok, Ok - firstly Nike I apologise as I did think you had used N - big sorry for using that word in full! I do NOT use N, I don't like it and I won't use it and I could also berate it. This is why I am trying to help a friend remove it which is always hard when I don't understand N myself.
Regarding my own Acronis, I may try and install it again. It crashes my system when I try and install it and I did contact them and received a patch. I've been really happy with Acronis until recently so I'll try and get it up and running again.

Hehehehehe .... no problems Musky. You obviously don't know my history or you would never have mentioned "N" in full where I am involved. What an overated piece of crap it is.
I love uninstalling it from customers computers and installing Avast in it's place along with SAS and Comodo. The worst part is telling the customer who has just paid $100 or so for this garbage, that they have just wasted their money. It's especially satisfying when Avast finds a virus just after install... You should see the look on their face when that happens... hahahaha!
I have never had a problem with Acronis. I'd be looking at something else if it doesn't work. Maybe a bad install, or something working against it. Make sure that you run all your usual anti-spy, anti-malware programs (SAS, MBAM) to get rid of the nasties that may have lodged on your computer unknowingly.

Did they give you proper instructions for the patch Von?? Some patches have to be installed, before installing the product and others afterwards.

No Ken, no instructions came with the patch, just to download and run it. I may try again as I've recently done a fresh reinstall and the XP is currently 'clean' but I will have to install the original and then the patch (both I have got on a cd) if I can get it working then I can recommend it to my friend in replacement of her awful N program.

I'm going to start a new thread concerning Acronis as I have taken this N thread off tangent, and I think I will also start a new thread concerning Comodo (mainly because it keeps this thread to N and my friends problems - and I think both Comodo and Acronis are worthy of their own threads in their own right) Hope the managers agree with this!
