Why not try the live disk first?

I think it has XP crawling (not running) on it myself, and if 6 GB is the total HD size, then Mint won't physically fit anyway because XP must be taking up at the very least 2 GB of that and probably a lot more.
If you intend to remove XP, then 6 GB would just about be enough.
Probably best to stick with distros aimed at older hardware though - something like 'TinyMe' or 'Puppy'

Mint will run perfectly well on a 2GB USB flash drive, about a fiver from Tesco's. Its obviously slower than hda1 but if you use a flash drive hda1 will be will be free for storage.
Just thought I'd throw another option at you.

USB booting is a fairly recent feature of motherboards, it is very unlikely to be supported on a PII - or even a PIII
Puppy does support using a floppy as a bootloader to access USB devices, but another downfall of a PII PC would be it's almost certainly using USB1 (unless a USB2 expansion card is fitted) - which would be hideously slow
[USB1 = 12 mb/sec against USB2 at 480 mb/sec (40 times quicker)]
