Failing a file system check is not good news
Did you actually make a 'root' password when running 'Mint Assistant' for the first time?
One thing that might work, is to run another Linux - but in live mode and preferably not ubuntu based When booting the live CD, it will attempt to fix the file system error for you

Good thinking kiddo and with the latest release of Ubuntu announced the other day, it won't be long before a new Mint is available too
