Can somebody link me to a good free method of submitting my site to a number of search engines, please?

You don't need to, they will find it faster than an ambush predator. Google employ mind readers to know in advance what you are going to do.

I googled the key words and got an old version of the site which doesn't even use the same name.

Thanks, LR; do I have to go through a submission for each search engine?

I seem to remember that there is a way to add your site to one engine and it sends them out to all, but not 100% sure, so here are some more sites...
Google
Yahoo
Add Me.com

I looked at Addme.com, but the only search engine I heard of was Google and it is the most used one, so I think I'll start there and work my way through the ones I encounter.

Google is not as easy as it looks. I need to add a metafile or create an HTML page to link in. I'm getting confused here.

Google already adds Proboards to it's search engine, but I'm sure when I added CIT, I didn't have to create an HTML page. Didn't it accept just your URL when you entered it then?

Nope, told me I had to confirm, by adding a metatag (I put it in the wrong place) or an HTML page(?)
We offer two methods of verification. You can either upload an HTML file with a name we specify, or you can add a meta tag to your site's index file. Choose your preferred method below. Help

I just added your URL to Google at the above link and got the message,,,,
"Thank you Your site URL has been successfully added to our list of URLs to crawl. Please note that we do not add all submitted URLs to our index, and we cannot make any predictions or guarantees about when or if they will appear. "
I don't know why your getting something else

Angel
It's occured to me that, if several people request your site, Google will probably push it up its rankings.
I don't know anything about it. But if you can give a few details I will be happy to google it to help out.
After all, that is what most commercial sites do anyway.

few pointers on seo, you need a good amount of your keywords spread throughout your page. Your homepage currently has no occurance of pension (except within pensioners) or action. Also it contains a few occurances of "Wolverhampton Pensioners Convention" but this isn't included in your keywords. The only occurance of meetings is in the navigation menu. Adding a little introductory description to the home page to include your keywords will improve the sites listing. When adding Wolverhampton Pensioners Convention to your keywords be sure to also include Pensioners Convention and Wolverhampton Pensioners to them. When writing your content try to think what other people would search for to find you and use those words/phrases in your content and keywords. Also your content should come first in the body of your html file before things like navigation but this would mean a bit of extra work to get the div's displaying the way you want. I'm not familiar with btik as a host so not sure if you will have enough freedom to do that. Food for thought, all your pages have the same keywords but not the same content. For future reference the metatag that google provides you with should be placed in the head section of your homepage ie alongside your keywords, title, description and other meta info. Since lynnerose already uploaded a file for you this won't be needed but it's best to add it anyway. Take advantage of the sitemap and robot.txt in google. Search engines also like links so make sure you get as many links in as you can. Keep them relevant though. From the list of links out you have aim to have all or most of them include a link to you. Use your homepage in forum sigs especially the forums on your links page and encourage your members to do the same at those forums. Make sure you include some of your keywords alongside your link at directories you may be added to as well. Nothing to do with seo now you should also 'hide' your email address from spambots. You can do it various ways my preference is to encrypt it using javascript. I've did an example for you at a site called guymal.com using email address example@wolverhamptonpensionersconvention.btik.com which gave the following script <script language='JavaScript'> <!-- var guymal_enc= ":g&ntc`;$kgojri<c~gkvjcFqijpctngkvrihvchuoihctueihpchroih(drom(eik$8c~gkvjcFqijpctngkvrihvchuoihctueihpchroih(drom(eik:)g8"; for(guymal_i=0;guymal_i<guymal_enc.length;++guymal_i) { document.write(String.fromCharCode(6^guymal_enc.charCodeAt(guymal_i))); } //--> </script>
I remove the script tags so it now looks like <!-- var guymal_enc= ":g&ntc`;$kgojri<c~gkvjcFqijpctngkvrihvchuoihctueihpchroih(drom(eik$8c~gkvjcFqijpctngkvrihvchuoihctueihpchroih(drom(eik:)g8"; for(guymal_i=0;guymal_i<guymal_enc.length;++guymal_i) { document.write(String.fromCharCode(6^guymal_enc.charCodeAt(guymal_i))); } //-->
Copy whats left of the code into notepad and save it as "email.js" (with the quotes). I put mine in a directory called _scripts (the _ hides the folder). Now all you have to do is enter the following line wherever you want the email address to appear. <script language='JavaScript' src="_scripts/email.js"></script> *presuming _scripts is at the root of your website

How do I add more keywords to Google? If anybody would care to link to our page, we'll gladly reciprocate; I'm considering adding a new links section on the forum.

Is your group anything to do with greywolves.co.uk?

That is our old site that we are moving away from. One of the reasons for the move being lack of support from the hosts.

I see.
I entered several search parameters from your current site and each time, Google gave me the greywolves site.
As yet, not managed to get your new site.
But will keep trying.

The answer is in Keywords and Meta Tags you currently have keywords Pensioners, pension, action, meetings try adding a line like this <meta content=" Pensions Wolverhampton Senior Citizens Old Age Benefits Action Group OAP'S" name="keywords"> Old Age Pensioners may be somewhat derogatory but it's a well used term and might help.

If you google "wolverhamptonpensionersconvention" (in quotation marks) you get two direct links on the first page. If you try "wolverhampton pensioners" you get lots of third party results which would prompt a searcher to try for "wolverhamptonpensionersconvention" Isn't that address a bit longwinded? I like the greywolves one.

I like the greywolves one, but it is contentious and when I discussed it with the committee, they alll wanted the full name.

Entering wolverhamptonpensionersconvention as phoney suggests in #24 brings up the Grey Wolves page, with a redirection: Wolverhampton Pensioners' Action GroupPlease note that we are now at. www.wolverhamptonpensionersconvention.btik.com. 0012525 people have visited this website. www.greywolves.co.uk/ - 10k - Cached - Similar pages Clicking it takes you directly to your new site. Separating the words brings up grey wolves again. But clicking this also brings you directly to your new site. Entering Wolverhampton Old Age Pensioners brings neither but does link to Help the Aged. From the sounds of it Angel, I'd say you've cracked it!!
