It started a few weeks back when IE couldnt seem to find certain web sites so I installed firefox (as its my fave) & everything was fine but now it is strugglin to find most web sites, i cant even access 3 homepage (says cannot find the webpage as if my internet is not connected) but when it does this I am actively speaking on messenger & the 3connect thingy has nearly full signal? Do u think it is 3 thats playing up or my lappy? Any help gratefully received!! Gemma ) PS. lovely new site by the way

I have a dongle on 3 Network for my lappy, for when I'm not connected to my home network. I have never had any bother with it and usually get 3.6 Mb connection. Mobile networks can get blind spots, or places where the signal is reduced. Even in some houses, the signal can vary from one room to another. Electrical devices, waterpipes and certain types of insulation can interfere with a mobile connection. I have lent my laptop to someone, so I can't put it on 3 Network to find out if there is any reason that connections are bad. Unless you have been using it in the same spot all the time, that might be your trouble. As your using Vista, theres nothing that I can tell you about what could cause it through a system fault.

Hi Ken, thanks for the speedy response! I have found the signal is worse in my kitchen than anywhere else but just lately have only been using the laptop at the pc desk so im sure its not a signal block, its soo annoying whatever it is though! It cant even find ebay now & for the record i hate vista but wouldnt know where to begin with getting it changed Gemma ;D

If Messenger is working fine but you can't access websites, that would suggest a HTTP resolution issue, wouldn't it? Therefore the problem is with 3.
Unless HTTP traffic is being flooded by a virus monopolizing the connection for eg, a DoS attack. Mind you I never jump to the 'virus' conclusion, but it's a possibility.
Gemma, I use Vodafone mobile broadband and the connection utility shows the current upload/download data rate. Does 3 have a similar thing? It might help to know if it's showing a lot of traffic or virtually none.
edit - The signal strength shown means very little. My vodafone connection shows the same signal strength both upstairs in the bedroom, and down in the lounge. But it doesn't actually work at all downstairs.

Gemma, Have a read of the post by GardenLibrarian
PS.....could it be your firewall interfering? Try disabling it or make sure it is set to allow the dongle set-up, but remember to enable it again after the test.

I had a similar problem to this.
Open Internet Options which should be on the cogged wheel icon top RH corner of Internet Explorer.
Go to Connections. Click on LAN. Uncheck all three boxes.
Hope this helps.

Kubik - I am now running a virus scan just be sure as its only scheduled to do so every moneday at 7pm! As for the 3 connection yep it has a upload/download rate thingy... ive only just turned the laptop on (9mins connected) & its saying: Upload 379KB Download 1.3MB Total 1.6MB I will keep my eye on that to see what happens! LynnRose - thanks for that link, after reading it & checking my lappy i had 3 updates waiting to be installed! (im terrible for clickin remind me later!) About the firewall, i dont really understand how they work but could it possible block a website somedays yet not others? I will have a play shortly! Jojo - I have done that in IE (touch wood though webpages are currently workin so i dont know for sure if it solved it or if its just having a good day lol!) Is there a way to do the same thing as that in firefox? Thankyou for all your help, its appreciated & sorry if my questions are really obvious!!

Hi again, right been connected to the net for 13 hours (not been on PC constantly just leave it on all day) have done our average browsing which would prob total about 2/3 hours max, & totals on 3connection are: upload: 13.7MB download: 63.2MB total: 76.9MB is that about right? Gemma

Yes, there is nothing there to suggest unusual activity.
"Jojo - I have done that in IE (touch wood though webpages are currently workin so i dont know for sure if it solved it or if its just having a good day lol!) Is there a way to do the same thing as that in firefox? "
You don't need to. It's a system setting but one that can be accessed from the browser. In Firefox it's under Tools > Options > Advanced > Settings
The dialogue box reads differently but does the same thing.
It doesn't matter though, as if you've set it in IE or via the control panel in Vista, it will apply to all your browsers.
I think ken was probably right, and that there is no real problem other than a poor signal. That or the network is getting more and more congested, and switching to Firefox helped for a while as it's a more efficient application.
