Take the memory modules out and put them back in the opposite slot, so you change them over.

Have you tried starting PC in safe mode, do you still get the problem, if not then its probably one of the drivers causing the problem. Start Run msconfig and remove ticks in the startup list. see if its OK if so put ticks back until the error returnsd. that will point you to the file causing the problem. If its name identifies which part of system is causing the problem then try reinstalling the software / driver causing it.

hi thanks to you both for your help, this has bugged me all day, continually trying various things suggested here and online, i had to go away for a couple of hours and left it running when i came back everything seems to be ok, i will just leave it as is at the moment, but please don't go far just in case it happens again. i will try the safe mode if it happens again cheers jim

Sounds like some infection, use the 'combofix' program in the useful utilities section, then post a HJT log

One of the most common causes, is humidity on the pins of the memory modules. Taking them in and out will normally fix it. However it didn't in your case, but leaving it running might have dried it out. Its a fault that normally affects computers that are only used now and again. You dont get it in a computer that is running all the time. Laptops being carted about in cases are probably the most prone to it.
