I appreciate that it isn't acceptable, on CIT, to ask for ways to pirate commercial stuff.
I have some videos which I made with my camcorder and burned to a DVD a couple of years ago. Originals no longer available.
Would like to copy these back onto my computer so I can send over the net.
Any suggestions? Easy, cheap and good quality, preferred.

OK I've used both of these. Tried different settings and tried several times.
Handbreak will only make files suitable for iPhone. I don't have any codex for a player and in any case, not much use, since I need to send the file elsewhere.
DVD Fab works but the image has numerous interference lines so it;'s unwatchable.
Shame really. I'm sure it's perfectly possibly but presumably, the corporate financial might of the media companies is making the production of a decent ripper too much of a risk now.
Gradually, the net is becoming yet another casuality of corporate greed and political convience.

Encoding is very CPU intensive and it will struggle on lesser PC's Is your PC fairly new?

2.40 gigahertz Intel Core2 Quad Q6600 64 kilobyte primary memory cache 4096 kilobyte secondary memory cache
I've done it previously, with lesser PCs. But sadly, don't have that software anymore.

Yeah, I thought about that mikkh. But that still leaves a file that can't be played on any machine.
I need to send copies to other people.

I have just read your original post again Jojo. If you copied the disks as ISO files, you could send them to friends. If the disks play, then an ISO copy burnt to a new disk will work. An ISO copy is an exact image of the original and codecs dont come into it. They encode some disks so you cant make an ISO copy, but as these are your own disks that doesn't apply.

Thank ken. I just want to put these DVDs back onto my computer so I can extract clips and post them.
It seems really silly, not to mention strange, that I could do this quite easily a couple of years ago.
These videos were all recorded, privately, with a camcorder or mobile phone. Subsequently, loaded onto DVD.
You know something? I understand that there are numerous codex' and formats. What I can't understand is why?
I appreciate the needs of the desperately poor film industry. But these are mine!
There doesn't seem to be a tremendous shortage of DVD rippers and other stuff out there. But using them is more likely to install spyware than rip a DVD.
I also can't understand why my machine was more than capable of doing the job a few years ago, yet now is considered to be so old it's working to the limits.

Download yourself a copy of Format Factory. It is a completly free file conversion program that I have mentioned on here many times before. IT is excelent. It will convert almost any file (picture, sound, movie etc.) to any other file type. I wasn't sure if it could rip directly off a DVD so I have just tried it with one of my own films. I put the DVD in the drawer, fired up Format Factpry and selected the option to convert all to .AVI. I then selected the source file (my DVD) and chose the videoTS folder (don't worry about the AudioTS folder as that will be empty and just selecting the VideoTS will include the sound) then select the VOB file, ther will be a couple of VOB files for your film so hover your mouse over them to check which is the video file, one will be measured in either Mb or Gb, this is the movie, ignore the one that is lsted in Kb. Once you have added the file to be ripped to the list just click on it to select it and hit the start tab.....thats it, You'll get a fully working video on your PC in whichever file format you had chosen. If you want it in another format just re encode it with Format Factory.
Can't say this enough (I should be on commission from these people) get yourself Format Factory, it's got to be one of the best (and it's truely free) programs out there.

Each brand of electronics use their own codec for the simple reason of keeping it in the family Jojo. If you buy one of their cameras, they want you to buy their products to go with it. There is no other reason for cameras not to all use the basic regular formats. The really expensive cameras seem to be easier to deal with, its the bargain basement stuff are the hardest. They practically give you the camera, then unless your very clever, you have to buy everything else to go with it. Years ago things were much more basic, now everyone and his dog is making cameras.
I've a feeling you might be overlooking the obvious. Instead of trying to find a modern program to do the job, look at the old versions that were in use when you burnt your disks originally. Most of them old versions can be got hold of for nothing and they still do what they were made for, its just that most people have moved on. You dont need a multi tasking program, just the one that did the job in the first place. Theres that website, Old Versions dot com or something very similar. Mikk can tell you what it is, thats where I would look.

No need to feel a fool Jojo, until you raised the question I had no idea that Format factory would rip straight from a disc, as they say 'You learn something new every day'. Well in my case, every now and again at least. So you see you have taught me something, thanks
MM :-)

Me again. Format Factory has done the job, but the playback is stalling at certain points. The sound continues, but the picture freezes. After a time, the freeze stops, video playback starts again at a later point, but freezes again. Sound continues unaffected. I am getting the image below, before I start playback, but don't know what it means.

I'm getting exhasperated.
I redone the job, this time selecting .wmv
The video stalls at exactly the same point.
It's strange. The video is fine on the DVD, running like a hot knife through butter. But it stalls on this point, when I rip it to my HD

I would make an ISO of the DVD Jojo and burn it that way. Send your friends a copy of the DVD and let them rip it if they want to.

Why not just do a copy of the original DVD and then send it to you friends Jojo?

Copying is probably going to have to be it.
But I really wanted to take a few clips out and post them
It's so frustrating, I use to be able to do this and have done it before. But the programs just don't seem to be available now.
I can only assume that, pressure from movie producers has led to software chages making this almost impossible, For the likes of me, at least
