The motherboard on my main PC went and I've been so busy with one thing or another, I just grabbed the best of my lesser PC's and shoved Puppy 5.28 in the drive to use in the meantime.
Puppy unlike most Linux live CD's doesn't lock the optical drive because it needs to access it to run programs, it puts itself in RAM instead thus leaving the drive free to burn CD/DVD's watch DVD's etc and it can run without a hard drive at all, if it has to.
I already use Puppy on a regular basis as a rescue CD to grab data and pictures from a corrupt Windows installation, but haven't used it on a daily basis for a long time.
Long story short, it does everything I need it to on a daily basis and I've been using it for quite a while now because the new motherboard replacement got lost in the post and is finally due for pick up today. I did tell him there was no rush and he took that a bit too literally!
The biggest surprise was that it ran a Windows program (pokerstars) effortlessly through the 'wine' emulator. My nephew tested it to destruction by playing 8 tables at once and it handled it with no problems
I've always rated Puppy as a good Linux distribution but I was very impressed with that bit of non Windows magic because I've never rated 'wine' that highly - it is just a 30 MB emulator after all.
Even if you have no interest at all in Linux, get yourself a copy of Puppy for when and I mean when, not if, Windows misbehaves again. You might be pleasantly surprised
