I can't seem to find the setting to change this. If I open an Excel file, and then close it, the Excel program remains open (and blank). I would like the Excel program to close when I close the last file. Can somebody tell me where this setting may be located?
Many thanks Mike

You should have a little X in the top right hand corner that turns red when you put the curser on it and closes the program when you click it.

I dont understand what your problem is Mike. I dont use Excel, but I do use MS Office. If I'm using Publisher or Word and I close what I'm working on, Office doesn't close. Then if I have forgotten to save anything, when I click the X I get a reminder to save. Sometimes I use Publisher and Word at the same time and its easy to forget to save something, so that clicking the X is a life saver.

Could it be that you are clicking on the 'workbook cross' instead of the 'excel cross'...the topmost cross on right-hand side is the one you need to click on. See picture

As long as you have saved everything clicking the top one will shut everything down. If you haven't saved you will get a warning. If you click the bottom one, you will still have the top one to click. If it looks like Lynnroses picture; theres nothing wrong with it, thats the way it works.

As the others have said the top cross should shut Excel down
You could try going to File then clicking on Exit

If clicking twice to shut the program is the only fault, I would buy a high energy drink and stick it out. Worse things than that happen at sea and I dont really think there is anything wrong with the program. Is the resolution set right for the monitor?? It could be the workbook is covering the full page and not leaving the program X exposed. Without actually seeing the layout, its a job to even hazzard a guess.

If you have an open workbook you should have TWO closure X's at the top right hand side of your screen.
Clicking on the lower X (small black one) merely clears the screen (close window). Clicking on the upper RED one closes the entire file down.
