I'm not sure I want 100 Mb just yet Lynnrose, most places cant even handle 50 Mb. Unfortuneatly, you cant suck data out of a server and so you are stuck with whatever speed they can give you. Even download site with good servers, are handling so many people that its almost impossible to get full benefit. Microsoft Technet is about the only place I know for a decent download, its a pleasure when your downloading at better than 3000 Kbs and its seldom less than 2000 Kbs.

I'm getting well over 2000 kb/sec on a 20 Mb connection, so I'm in no rush to upgrade even to 50 just yet

I'm quite happy with my 20Mb connection which delivers 20Mb+ consistently, and is more than enough for my current needs.

Present company excepted of course - most people on 50 Mb just want faster file sharing capabilities, there's no real benefits (over 20 Mb) for much else.
When my daughters here with a friend, maybe two of us are on iPlayer streaming programs and the other will be on youtube and I don't notice any lag
video conferencing does cause a noticeable slow down though for some strange reason

H! Mikkh,
Yes i have 20mb and it will not make much difference when i get 50mb but i look at it this way, i can i will, i want maybe next year i will have to cut back too 20mb and one of the reasons is i get a router ( which i was going to get anyway and i think it is wireless as well and i can attach my laptop)
Firefox seems to have slowed down this week on a few computers that i have been on i think it must be the server as my 20mb seems to be OK

Thats the thing, there is always 2 servers online as well as Super Beast and often another computer as well. But as I said before your governed by the servers the other end anyway, plus the jump servers you have to go through to link up. A lot of people seem to think getting a fast connection is a cure all, but its not as simple as that. Remember the old adage; its not what you've got, its how you use it.

About 99.9% of routers are wireless now Elvis. I have got an old Belkin wired router, but I dont know if it would carry a 50 Mb connection its pretty ancient. Anyway Virgin supply both a modem and a router with their 50 Mb package. A 50 Mb/s dongle for your laptop as well, as some laptops have only about 20 Mb wireless connection built in.
The router and dongle are D-Link, so I wouldn't hazard a guess at how long they will last. As long as Virgin replace them, I not too bothered.

Has a router got a firewall and ante-virus built in? KC

A router has a hardware firewall, but you have to run a software antivirus Elvis.
