Recently I was sent an email from Virgin Media offering me a new Broadband Modem 'to make better use of my 20 Meg connection'. I rang them up and received the new modem a few days later. Well I just got around to installing it and I am now getting about 18.5 Mbps (testing via speed test) Previously I was getting 14 on a good day and around 8 to 10 most days. I will see over the next week or so if the new modem helps thing along.

My old silver NTL modem was just about crapped right out. Instead of messing with Virgin, I bought an NTL blue modem on eBay for a fiver and free delivery. It was brand new in the box, but NTL had long gone. I get about 23 Mbs during the night and 16 or 17 Mbs during the day. If Virgin ever get round to offering me a new one, it will probably stay in the box until this one craps out. If they up my speed to 50 Mbs, I might need a new one. Does anyone know what the top speed of the old blue NTL modems is???

I don't know what the newer black square ones are capable of - I get 19.5 on mine mostly, but I went to see someone a few days ago and he had a very trendy looking new modem that he had to have to get the full 50 Mb he had just upgraded to.
So I guess they can't do 50 Mb (the square looking ones like mine)

Mine's one of the newer types, I think. Can't say I've ever tested it for speed, I'm not that bothered, because after a certain level it all looks the same to me.

50mb Modems are squarish with a rounded top when mine was installed I was told it must be kept flat not upright, no idea why though. The make appears to be Ambit.

Mine sits flat which makes sense as the vents are in the top and bottom. To mount it the like it is in the pictures looks wrong to me, as heat rises and there isn't a fan on the thing. It doesn't get very hot, but it probably would if your mum knitted a little hat for it.

Mine is similar to that, no makers name, just says Virgin; is it possible to find out more?

This is the new trendy one Ken, yours must be years old if it's got NTL on it - All the new ones have Virgin on them

That would seem to suggest 30 Mb is the top speed for older modems

I bought mine about 2 months after Virgin took over Mikk, there were loads of them for sale on eBay. I think the old silver ones were only about 10 Mbs, but they didn't offer me a new one when I upgraded to 20 Mbs. I had already bought this one and I knew it could handle 20 Mbs, but thats about all I knew about it. A friend of mine has got an NTL one the same as mine and that one was given to her by Virgin when they first took over. It looks like they didn't want to waste anything.
Them new ones are very trendy looking things.

Mine's fairly new, but not near as stylish as that new one.

I doubt if they dish them out unless you sign up for 50 Mbs.

I had stuck with my original modem that I had when I first went to broadband under Telewest. Mine was the original Surfboard modem. I now have the small black Virgin one. Virgin didn't ever offer a new one when I went from the original 1.5Mb service through 5, 10 then 20Mb. It was just an email offering the new modem that I bothered to phone and ask for one. It arrived and sat on a shelf for about two months. I only got around to installing it the other day as when I came home from work I had no internet connection (neighbours on Virgin still had theirs), I tried all the normal stuff so thought I would dig the new Modem out, I should have done it ages ago as everything seems a bit quicker now (a noticeable difference).

I have an ADSL2+ connection here in Laidley,Oz. It's a 24mbps connection and as i'm only less than a kilometer from the exchange, I get 23.6mbps most of the time. It's actually better than the unlimited cable connection I had in Brisbane.
My modem was supplied by myself. It's a Netgear Wireless Modem Router, model #DG834PN, and it's bloody fast. When I had cable in Beenleigh, I had a Motorola SURFboard modem, model #SB5100i, and that was supplied by my ISP.
