Your operating system is on C: and D: is a storage partition, which probably has a system image of XP for restoring the C: drive.
You can install Win7 on D: but you will lose the ability to reinstall XP if things go wrong.
You have a couple of choices here:
You can put your Windows image on external media, so it can still be used to restore XP if you wanted to. Then you could install Win7 to D: and have dual boot between XP and Win7.
You can leave D: as it is and install Win7 on C: Then if you wanted to reinstall XP, you could use the image on D: to do so. You might possibly have to format the C: drive first, or you XP re-installation disk might not work with Win7 on C:

As all your software is on your C: and you cannot update from XP to Win 7 without doing a clean install and re-installing all your software again it would be best to put Win 7 on your C; drive

Dual boot is a good idea in your case Ray, if you haven't got the software on disk. I've done the same thing, as my favorite sims wont work on Win7. It only takes a minute to reboot into XP to play a game.
