If you have more than 1 PC to install Windows 7 then its worth getting the family upgrade pack. I bought this version for £112 from Staples. Although its called an upgrade pack, I see no problem in installing an old copy of XP onto a PC just to be able to then do an upgrade to Windows 7 as its a clean install anyway from XP. Just need to be able to boot the DVD from an XP installation. I can put XP onto any PC in about 1 hour

I have only used the full retail, but from what I've read an upgrade is as good as the retail version on XP. Even with Vista, it gives you the choice of upgrade or clean install. The only difference is you must have at least XP installed on the machine and you cant install a new one with a blank hard drive. If in the future you want to reinstall, it uses itself as the previous version of Windows. If you store an image of it on a USB drive, you can use that to reinstall a new hard drive if the drive spits the dummy. You need at least a 4 gig USB drive to store the image. Apparently it reinstalls fine from a USB image, whereas previous versions of Windows can be very hit or miss.

H! computing50yrs,
Yes the family pack would be better for me but it's a case of not being sure about it going onto my computer with XP on it and my first computer has W7RC on it.
£112 from Staples very tempting ;D
"I can put XP onto any PC in about 1 hour" that seems to be a bit long for XP i never thort it took that long?

H! KC,
When you say "If in the future you want to reinstall, it uses itself as the previous version of Windows." dose that mean i will not have to reinstall XP each time i want to reinstall W7 just install over the last W7?
I have USB 4gb going spear at the moment so thats not a problem so dose W7 allow you to put it on a usb stick can it be done in W7RC/ just out of interest.

Yes it allows you to reinstall with Win7 as the previous Windows installation, so you dont have to put XP back on.
I think you can use Windows Backup to put it on a USB Elvis, as long as you do it as soon as you install. It will make an image of just the bare Windows installation and it will just fit on a 4 gig USB. Otherwise you would need a backup program to do it, but it can be done. An installation disk for Win7 Home Premium is a little over 4 gig, but that includes all the files to upgrade to Ultimate if you bought the extra licence. Windows Backup doesn't include any of them files, in a system image.

Elvis - If you have ordered the family pack then when it arrives make sure they have sent you the correct version as when I received mine the guy picking from their stock sent the normal Windows 7 Home premium version. The family version has got at top left hand corner of card case Upgrade designed for Windows Vista Family Pack 3 Install on 3 machines for a special price
Designed for vista doesn't make any difference I have installed over XP no problem and there is a printed slip informing you about XP upgrade
I emailed them and they sent a courior round to pick up wrong version and correct version arrived couple of days later

I agree the family pack is really good and even though it says upgrade from vista if you have xp installed it just tells you to reboot xp for a clean install. I did this for a friend with a laptop XP and two PC's one XP and one vista they bought the family pack and I also updated my own machine from xp to windows 7 as well with out any problems If you or someone in your family is a student you can buy windows 7 for £30 a single install, but if you do have 3 machines it is well worth getting the family pack. ;D
