I have a seemingly serious problem. ALL of my shortcuts on Desktop plus programs pinned to the taskbar and the start menu are showing ONE icon which is actually Avast - it was Notepad (which I think is my fault.) This had something to do with the Clipboard shortcut I added a couple of days ago and tried for 1st time today, all was fine before that? I have unpinned all taskbar icons, since everyone was 'notepad' and defaulting there just displaying some sort of code?
ALL installed programs seem to be intact but loading them is not possible at the moment because relevant shortcuts are not there.
I would appreciate some help resurrecting this prob asap.

Try a System Restore to before the problem arose.

Tried system restore, it reports it cannot complete a restore, but this is not a new problem, I need to get it fixed.

Try resetting your Default Programs and see if that helps.

When you click on the Start Orb, in the right hand column should be a link "Default Programs" Click on it, then click on "Set Your Default Programs". When that opens, find your Default Browser in the left hand column and click on it and then at the bottom, click on Set as default. I had that happen once and I just reset my default browser and it fixed it.

Larry I tried that and set Maxthon as default and nothing changed. I then went back and set the other option "choose defaults for this program" also, that didn't solve the problem either I am afraid.

Ok then you have to rebuild your Icon cache. Here's how.
1. Close all folder windows that are currently open.
2. Launch Task Manager using the CTRL+SHIFT+ESC key sequence, or by running taskmgr.exe.
3. In the Process tab, right-click on the Explorer.exe process and select End Process.
4. Click the End process button when asked for confirmation.
5. From the File menu of Task Manager, select New Task (Run…)
6. Type CMD.EXE, and click OK
7. In the Command Prompt window, type the commands one by one and press ENTER after each command:
CD /d %userprofile%\AppData\Local DEL IconCache.db /a EXIT 8. In Task Manager, click File, select New Task (Run…)
9. Type EXPLORER.EXE, and click OK.
Or, you can search for IconCache.db and just delete it and reboot the computer.

I think I would be doing a full format and reinstall by now. If it wont fix and it wont restore there is something nasty chewing the system to pieces. You can spend weeks trying to fix the unfixable. To back up your files and reinstall, takes a couple of hours at the most with Win7. You dont have to stick all your usual programs back in a lump, just add them again when you have got the time or need them.
