I have Windows 7 64 bit
How do I format (clear the data from) a DVD-R disk? I cannont find any reference to this on Win7 or, in fact, anywhere else. I don't mind how basic you are with your answer.

You can right click and delete files on a DVD-R, but not format it as its a one time burn only. If the disk is unfinished you can add files to any free space on it, but not make any extra space. If its a finished disk you cant add anything to it, it becomes read only. You need to use DVD-RW disks if you want to re-use them.
Some burning programs say they can format DVD-R or CD-R, but they in fact only delete everything and make them unreadable for security when disposing of them. An axe is a quicker way of doing it.
DVD-RW disks wear out after a couple or so burns and with DVD-R being cheap now, its hardly worth buying DVD-RW disks.

That is a very enlightening answer and it helps me a lot as I have been using floppy disks for the last ten years and know virtually nothing about DVD's. Thanks a lot.

Your welcome. No you dont get very much on a floppy disk and a CD or a DVD is a much better choice. Now that USB is standard on all computers, a flash drive is a very good investment. Its only a few quid for a 4 gigabyte flash drive. Always go for a branded one though and not a real cheapy, or you could easily lose your files.
