I don't mind, although I have to worry about snubbing Vista - presumably because it's different to XP? Or is it just the nagging UAC and slowness she doesn't like? Either way I'm happy to advise and show you (Linux) life does exist outside Ubuntu. The number one choice has to be PClinuxOS equally at home on a laptop as it is on a desktop PC www.pclinuxos.com/index.php?option=com_ionFiles&func=download&Itemid=38That's an ISO image file you have to burn to CD before using. If you don't feel confident about 'burning' an ISO file, there are several places on the internet to buy a ready made CD for a modest shipping charge www.osdisc.com/cgi-bin/view.cgi/products/linux/pclinuxos/lcd.html(just over $4 with shipping to the UK, but it can take a week or more) Wireless shouldn't be a problem, although it is the number one 'sticking point' for laptop owners on any version of Linux. Normal wireless is usually OK (getting it from your wireless router) It's the USB dongle type with SIM cards as provided by the major mobile phone companies that you're likely to struggle with. If the laptop has an inbuilt webcam, it is unlikely to work, or work quite poorly, although it's been a while since I tested this feature and the 'kernel' (where Linux gets it's driver support from) is constantly updated to support new hardware. Just be aware of this possible failing before you start

Vista - i turned UAC off and turned off many fetchers and it was not so much of a resource hog but still slow and the UI ... well, Thanks for the link will DL & burn - no prob with ISO, been building Comps for over 20 years and burnt 100s of ISOs mostly with IMGburn, i will use DBAN to wipe the HDD then install, WiFi no prob we use two boosters so its house covered and will look at the webcam, thanks mikkh this will make the 5th Comp running in the house LoL = Karma

I'd probably take advantage of some Linux specialist 'live' CD's to partition. Dban is a bit time consuming and something I'd only use if I was selling the machine and wanted it wiped thoroughly first This one combines a partition manager (it's main feature) A Norton Ghost type application, as well as Firefox and a few other goodies - a very useful CD to have downloads.sourceforge.net/partedmagic/pmagic-4.3.iso.zipYou could even leave Vista on and just resize the free space to take Linux and have a dual booting setup
