When you say you've 'downloaded it onto the hard drive' - do you mean the ISO (CD image) ?
Have you 'burned' the ISO (image) to CD yet?
More importantly which version of Linux have you got? - there are literally hundreds of different versions.
If it's Ubuntu or one of it's many clones like Mint, you can install it to a Windows drive - preferably the one with the wired connection to make things easier

Basically, yes Things move a lot more quickly in the Linux world - sometimes too quickly to be honest, but that's mostly because hardware support is built in and doesn't (usually) come via drivers you install later. If you don't change your hardware you could be using the same version for years, but if you change things quite often and upgrade to newer hardware, it's likely you'll need the latest version to make sure it's supported. Have you got your 7.10 version installed 'properly' i.e with real Linux partitions rather than living in a pseudo file system inside a Windows folder? You can check by Right clicking 'My Computer' pick the 'manage' option and then choose 'disk management' in the storage section. Are there 'unknown (to Windows) partitions ? It's easier to install a newer version if you have real Linux partitions already and there's no reason to stick with Ubuntu/Mint with so many other versions available. PClinuxOS is a good alternative na.mirror.garr.it/mirrors/pclinuxos/live-cd/english/preview/pclinuxos-2009.2.iso

Would you like to change the heading whilst I download and install the above in its own partition or would you like to start a new topic, I'm quite sure lots of members would be very interested also it would give newbies of linux like me an opportunity to ask their own questions I think a good name would be "In the begining" or we can carry on from here.

I have burnt pclinuxos on a disc, it loads up to a blue desktop with icons it then sticks, the mouse arrow continues to move but that it, I have let it stand for about 1hr but thats it, going to try mint now.

Could be a bad burn, I always use a very pedestrian speed like 16x or slower (for CD's) but to save you further angst, maybe you should carry on with Mint - but do burn it slower than you normally would.
You don't need to burn it at all if you use the install in a Windows folder method (mint4win) You just need to 'mount' it via a virtual CD utility like Daemon Tools or 'Image Drive' in Nero

I have downloaded pclinuxos from a different souce, burnt it at a lower speed but still get to the same point in installing Icons horizontal and in the top left corner:- DE is up and running, I can move the mouse pointer but thats it, I dont like giving up that easy any other idea's, I don't know if you can remember but I was having driver problems with windows but I sorted that out but the screen display is smaller as if I need drivers, if we can't sort it out I will carry on with mint.
With much thanks Monty

In the same situation, I probably wouldn't bother - life's too short and there's plenty more fish in the sea.
It's a shame because I think PClinuxOS is worth looking at and doesn't usually cause problems like that
c'est la vie
