I would bring up the drive in My Computer Buzzy, highlight the files and cut and paste to the drive. Or a new file on the drive, to keep them all together.
Big files might take a while via USB.

Ken - I have some DVD DISKS I want to transfer to my Ex HDD, using the PC DVD writer/player, if possible? Sorry if I did not make myself clear. I assume some sort of software is required such as NERO? It is USB btw.

You mean you want to copy DVD movies (vob files etc) that play on a normal DVD player to avi files for storage on your external hard drive?

Yes Mikkh, that is exactly what I wish to do.

Sorry Buzz; it was me being thick as usual, I thought you already had them as files. I dont know what burning program you have got, but some programs have the facility to save them as images. Beyond that I cant tell you any more, until I investigate further. Mikk will probably be able to tell you before me. I could do it with Ashampoo 8, but I dont know whether the earlier versions that you can download for free can. Might be worth a look, v7 was pretty good and that can be got for free. You can get it at: majorgeeks.com/Ashampoo_Burning_Studio_d4851.html

Ken - thanks, it is not crucial just that I have some family stuff on DVD that may be better on HDD that I would not wish to lose.
As you say, maybe Mikkh might have a solution?

A really good DVD ripper that's free would be so useful
I've tried a few but sadly, the results have always been very disappointing.

That Ashampoo 7 has a ripper, that much I do know Jojo. How good it works, I couldn't say as I've not used it. I know someone who has and he says its OK. I like Ashampoo burning program as its easy to use and it works well. Its the only decent program they make, most Ashampoo apps are total crap ans I've tested a few.

I bought an AShampoo suite a few years ago and it was terrible. One item, called power encrypt refused to decript any files larger than 20megs!! I have since been using this, works brilliantly, handles any file size and is my favourite price!! www.baroufasoft.net/zerofootprint1.htmAShampoo refused to respond to any queries. I'm kinda cautious with that company since. But thanks for the tip anyway ken

CloneDVD2 does the job admirably, you can put the VOB files on whatever hard drive, pen drive, or disc you want, for burning to DVD later using the same program.

Your welcome Jojo. Yeah none of their stuff works except the burning program. I wont bother upgrading anymore, version 8 is all I need and thats not much different to v7. I think they are up to about v 10 now.
The only thing with using some of these programs, you have to use the same program to burn the files. If you can find a program to save them as an ISO image, you can burn them with anything.

I have been using ISORecorderV2RC1 for a while.
I can't remember where I got it from originally but it is accessable by right clicking a file and converts it to ISO.
But just googled the name and dozens of sites seem to have it.
To be honest, it was a while ago that I got it.
But what I would like is a ripper so I can take movie files from a DVD and convert these to compter format, without loosing too much quality.

This open source utility should suffice, it will copy(encode) to AVI, MP4 and a host of others for transferring to Ipods, Mobile phones etc It's called 'Handbrake' (for some obscure reason) handbrake.fr/?article=download
