I know I'm bangin on about my USB stick a bit but I've just come across a possible problem. If I use the flashdrive in another distro, or after I've booted Linux from the HD for instance, its possible to access the OS files and delete at will, because their not running!
Advice from another forum was to partition an ext2 file system instead of the fat32 as I have done, but the USB disk creator will not recognise an ext2 file system.
Any ideas on how I can protect them?

I'm sorry but I see that as a non problem and more of a bonus really.
You just need more confidence in knowing which drive is which
It used to be simpler before SATA became widespread, because internal (PATA aka IDE) HD's were called hda? ( where ? is the partition number - hda1 for what you know as C drive etc) and external HD's ( and SATA, SCSI etc) where called sda?
But some genius (!) decided to call all drives sda, whether it's PATA, SATA, internal or external, which was a pretty silly move IMO.
sda = the whole (primary) hard drive sdb = the second or external hard drive
To further confuse the issue, some distros (like my favourite Vector) stick to the old conventions, but it's more common for sda to mean any first hard drive now.
Have a look to see how yours are named. It shouldn't be a problem unless your internal partition(s) are exactly the same size as your pen/thumb drive because they should be recognisable by size alone

Thanks Mikkh, I'll pass your message on to the kids that tend to drift through, some of them will delete stuff out of shear devilment.

Hmm, I sense a raised eyebrow at my reply. Just carry the pendrive with you then, if other people are the problem.
Mine is always in my pocket and part of my leaving the house check
1 keys (check) 2 mobile (check - although I'll deliberately leave it on charge sometimes!) 3 wallet (check) 4 pendrive (check) 5 trousers (check) - for the ones that last had loose change in them, that is ! 6 brain (check) - I've forgotten it twice just recently

What about the beany, I suspect that's a permanent fixture too?
I fink I probaly am worryin bout noffin, it just seems that leavin your source code exposed and so easily deletable is an elementary programmin error. Not forgetting that Linux is an open source project of course.

Lol, no my headgear is for fishing only - and that's why I've got a smile on my face, because just out of shot, I'm holding a big fat carp about 20 lb in weight.
