All video and sounds files have certain codings which allow them to be compressed.
It seems almost every producer of videos creates a different set of codings. For what reason we can all guess.
But each set of codings is called a codex.
You have to download as many as you can find and let your computer select the best from the batch. '
Sadly, the spammers have discovered that this is the ideal way to slip in some of their rubbish as well. Apple, with its Real Player is a good example. A lot of spam and spyware with a second rate player.
To get round this sort of thing sites such as Klite have produced their little package, all 40 odd Megs of it.
It includes a nifty player for almost anything and a huge selection of codex'.
But be careful. The spammers know about this as well and producer their own package.
So, only use links provided by a reliable source.
CIT is reliable. Quite simply because everything is peer reviewed almost immediatly.

Indeedy, any media player is only as good as the codecs it supports. WMP is awful in that respect - and way too bloated anyway.
Any installed codecs can be used by any media player - consider them like drivers. If you don't have the right (multimedia) drivers, you won't be able to play certain sound/video formats, or it plays them badly as you have found out
