Hi guys, I think I have a loose connection on one of my HDs. When the connection is lost the OS boots up after a long delay and when it is finally running that particular HD is not accessible in File Explorer. As the connectors are plastic, squeezing them to make them tighter will not work. What would your reaction be to me inserting a piece of card to force the connector onto the contacts? Best, Alex

I don't like the idea, have you tried to see if the drive is recognised in "computer manager"?

More use taking a card out of your wallet and buying a new hard drive. Hard drive connections dont just decide to get loose, unless you ride around with your computer on the back of your motorbike.

Thank you for that. Noted. I will check the computer manager next time it happens. Alex

A different new cable would be my first approach, but I suspect as Ken says, that the HD itself is the problem. A new cable is obviously cheaper, so that should be your preferred starting route though

Messing around with the cable, make sure you haven't put any kinks in it. I prefer to flatten the cable and then coil it to shorten it to a useful size, making sure there are not any kinks. Kinks will give you an on off of the HD, caused by the heat in the case. Not sure why it does it, but it do.
Not taking computers apart daily anymore, its something I had almost forgotten.
