Hello, I'm hoping some can help me with this but I have a feeling I'll have to pay someone to reinstall Windows 10 for me.
I went to use my laptop yesterday and it must have updated during my absence. My Avast wouldn't launch though SuperAntiSpyware would (I scanned but found just the usual tracking cookies)
Google Chrome won't load and neither will the other browser that's new in Win10 (sorry can't remember the name) or Cortana - with Cortana I get a message saying "Mmmm we can't reach that page" etc
All my files have been moved and my music has all disappeared from Media Player. I'm not very savvy when it comes to finding my way around with computers so please bear with me if you think you may be able to help.
I am unable to do a system restore as it says there are no restore points other than yesterday when four were created and I'm assuming that's when the update was performed.
Thank you for reading this,
Jay

Restore to Yesterday, it will restore to before the offending updates were installed. Then the best thing you can do is turn the Updates off.

I have restored as far as it will let me but no change - programs won't load and I'm told I'm not connected to internet yet my WiFi says I am! Giving up for now as I can use my Nexus (where everything is normal so it must be a laptop/Windows fault) but thanks again for your suggestion.

Put your installation disk in and select the Repair option and not the Full Reinstallation. That will reinstall Windows leaving your personal files.
If you have got an installation partition and not a disk, you can still do the same thing.
Turn off the Automatic Updates before going online.
You will have to hope you haven't got a nasty hiding in your personal files, or the problem will soon return.

Thanks so much for that! I did the reinstall by going to recovery but of course I am now back to Win8. That's fine by me but I will be trying to upgrade to Win10 again. I have run all my usual scans with Avast, Malwarebytes and Spybot etc and all seems good. I did also turned off updates before downloading my preferred programs and until I decide how to move on with things. I really appreciate the help you've given!

Your welcome.
Sorry I dont have any fancy tricks for Windows 10, I have installed it on a mini laptop I hardly use and that is as far as I got with it. I still use Windows 7 and will probably go with Linux, if Windows 7 becomes unusable. Hopefully that wont happen for quite a while, but nothing will induce me to use Windows 10.
Good luck with Windows 8, another abortion that I wont use. I have got friends who like it, its every man for himself.

I understand completely - I'm an XP girl myself but, as I'm not very savvy with technology, I thought I had to move with the times. And just wanted to add that I had to get someone to reinstall Win10 for me. One day with 8 was enough for me!

XP was around a lot longer than it was supposed to be, it got off to a bad start and swiftly got fixed. It was finally forced out of business, when websites started to use stuff that XP couldn't run. Up to now, there is nothing that Windows 7 cant handle and its only a little bit awkward with touch screen. Windows 8 was brought out as an OS for the Surface; then MS in their infinate wisdom, stuck it on every piece of crap they produced. It was probably quite good on a Surface, especially as MS didn't have anything else. On any other type of computer, it was a complete waste of space. Windows 7 is definately the best regular OS that MS have produced and I think their software days are nearly over. I think they will continue to knock out hardware however, for how long is anybodies guess.
