I rather foolishly told Ccleaner to delete old prefetch data.
After restarting I'm being asked to activate windows.
When I try I am returned an error: 0xC004C003 and a message that the key has been blocked.
I've temporaly extended the activation time by typing at the command line: SLMGR -REARM
But that is a temp fix

The more I research prefetch and superfetch, it seems unlikely that either of these could produce this result.
My Windows 7 has shown activated and genuine since I installed in last July. Now it says it is not and need a key.

A system restore should fix that Jojo.

System Restore is off.
But I don't understand why it is happening.

Did you back up when Ccleaner asked if you wanted to?

I didn't do the registry part so it didn't ask.
I've written to the company who supplied the key. They have written back asking me to forward them the details.
This is most curious. If it had happened quite quickly, it might have indicated a problem with the key itself. But after this amount of time seems strange.
The company are a M$ Partner, so presumably will have better luck approaching M$ to ask what is going on.
I was thinking this might be one of those silly niggles that seem to happen now and then, but knowing which search terms to enter is a problem.
I'll keep you all posted.

Had a response from the company and a new key.
All seems fine now. Showing Genuine M$ Software.

I have used C Cleaner for as long as its been around, I always keep it updated and never had a bit of trouble with it. Before the last update it ran a bit slow, but it worked OK. In fact I have never had anything happen like you describe, for any reason.

I don't think it was Ccleaner either now.
There is no malware reported from any of the tools I use, including those recommended by mikkh here.
It could only have been M$ for whatever reason. Unless others start reporting the same problem I may simply need to put this to experience.
