My wife uses Thunderbird as her email client. This comes up repeatedly: Be really grateful to anyone with a solution.

I don't use POP mail any more, but the first thing to check with any similar security problem is the clock/date - If it's wrong, it will cause all kind of strange error messages, none of them giving a hint to what the real problem is

I know the clock date is correct.
I'm thinking of dumping Thunderbird frankly. I've heard others with this problem.
I'm using eM client. It will be a bit of a pain getting her to accept the change, but this panel pops up every time she starts Thunderbird and sometimes while she is using it.
It's driving me crazy.

Thank you mikkh.
My wife uses the M$ Security Essentials, not Avast. (I use Avast on my W7 drive).
But it did give me a clue and I have switched off the STARTTLS. It claims the password is insecure, but I can't see any way round the problem.
I could still change her email client, but every bug and I can expect a reaction. (Strange how women always want everything to be perfect.)
But thanks again for the clues. It's a wonder the internet functions at all, there are so many of these silly things waiting around every corner. I'm currently struggling to get started on my latest online game, having treated myself to a Black Widow game controller. Chatting to someone on a forum who also has one and is also having the same problems as me. He told me that the previous night, his 12 year old nephew came round and managed not only that bit but almost all the rest of it as well. He only gave up because he had to go home. What do they feed these kids with?

Unless I know something works fine with Windows, I only use M$ programs. The one exception I make is security. What's the point of using M$ security, when it was them that wrote the insecure program in the first place.

In my wife's case, I should have done just that.
But it's a good point ken.
As for the security stuff, after getting myself stung with email programs and such, I have left that well enough alone. We have a hardware firewall and she has accepted MWB, plus CCleaner.

Thunderbird problem? Sounds like a job for INTERNATIONAL RESCUE!
Hope your problem now resolved but have you try setup a portable version of Thunderbird and compare the configuration?
I started using Thunderbird under a month ago for one of my Hotmail account so that I can print out the email content without the mail folder on the left printed as well. I use the standard configuration suggested by Thunderbird for IMAP and not POP3 access. I have MSSE as well as Avira installed and so far I have not experience the problem you have.

Good suggestion hawnik. I'll bear it in mind if any further problems crop up.
