USB3 has made connecting an external drive as fast as a SATA internal. Very useful for laptops that dont have a second internal drive.

Ken that is right and not many lappies have more than one HD, as far as I know. So very useful.

Cheaper laptops only have one drive Pete, but top of the range have 2. When I bought mine the dual drives were just coming in, I could have had one if I wanted a 15 inch, but I wanted the bigger screen and had to settle for a single. I do have 2 x USB3, so its no real hardship. My main computers BIOS dont recognise USB3, which makes booting impossible and I can only use eSATA in an emergency. USB3 is fine once Windows has started. However my laptop BIOS recognise USB3 and therefore I can boot from an external.

My little notepad has TWO! But I doubt they are USB3.
Incidentally, on the subject of USB, if I have say, a USB2 port and connect a games controller to it, is the controller likely to react noticeably slower than with USB3?
(Actually, I really should start a separate thread for that. I may later)

These usb grades are usually backwards compatible, so things should at least work okay.

All USB are backward compatable, USB2 is faster than the orignal and 3 is faster than eSATA. I am going into space before they bring out USB4.

For things like keyboards, mice or controllers, even USB1 should be enough
